President Donald Trump on Monday escalated his public campaign to pressure Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell into cutting U.S. interest rates, releasing a sharply worded, handwritten note via social media.<\/p>\n

In the note\u2014penned in Trump\u2019s signature all-caps script with a Sharpie\u2014Trump rebuked Powell for keeping U.S. rates \u201ctoo high,\u201d arguing that America\u2019s central bank had fallen \u201cbehind the curve.\u201d He attached a chart titled \u201cWorld Central Bank Rates,\u201d highlighting dozens of countries\u2014from Switzerland and Japan to Botswana and Albania\u2014whose benchmark rates, he noted, are already lower than those set by the Fed.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have cost the USA a fortune and continue to do so,\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cHundreds of billions of dollars being lost!\u201d he added, accusing Powell of ignoring \u201cNo inflation\u201d signals from the broader economy. A red arrow drawn on the chart pointed to six nations with lower rates, accompanied by the words, \u201cShould be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The release of the note preceded the White House press briefing, where Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt read from what she described as \u201coriginal correspondence\u201d from Trump. Leavitt echoed the president\u2019s criticism, declaring, \u201cThe American people want to borrow money cheaply, and they should be able to do that,\u201d and faulted Powell for resisting rate cuts despite a \u201cbooming\u201d U.S. economy.<\/p>\n
