After nearly 60 years in Hollywood, the legendary Michael Douglas, 80, recently shocked fans by announcing that he has \u201cto stop\u201d acting before he drops \u201cdead on the set.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before establishing himself as a charismatic, often ruthless on-screen presence in the 1980s and \u201990s,\u00a0Michael Douglas<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 31 at the time \u2013 won his first Academy\u00a0Award<\/a>\u00a0in 1976 as a producer for\u00a0One Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Over his career, the 80-year-old Douglas \u2013 the son of the legendary\u00a0Kirk Douglas<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 has redefined the image of the complex male lead with roles like the morally ambiguous Gordon Gekko in\u00a0Wall Street<\/em>, which earned him his second Oscar, to steamy psychological thrillers like\u00a0Fatal Attraction<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Basic Instinct<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Marvel\u2019s \u2018Ant-Man\u2019<\/h2>\n

Though Douglas has tackled a wide range of\u00a0roles<\/a>\u00a0throughout his almost 60-year career, younger audiences likely know him best as Dr. Hank Pym in Marvel\u2019s\u00a0Ant-Man<\/em>\u00a0franchise.<\/p>\n

He last appeared in 2023\u2019s\u00a0Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 but don\u2019t expect a return to the MCU anytime soon.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had the experience, and I was excited to do it. I\u2019d never done a green screen picture before,\u201d Douglas told\u00a0Deadline<\/a>\u00a0in an interview marking the 50th<\/sup>\u00a0anniversary of\u00a0One Flew Over the Cuckoo\u2019s Nest<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 the film that his father handed him the rights to produce.<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI did the\u00a0The Kominsky Method<\/em>\u00a0because I wanted to work with Chuck Lorre and try some comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Discussing his career and the challenges of balancing life as both a performer and producer, Douglas admitted that the nonstop demands took a toll.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m enjoying my hiatus and enjoying my life. It was overwhelming running the production company and acting at the same time,\u201d he said, referring to Further Films that he founded in 1997. The independent production company has backed projects like\u00a0Don\u2019t Say a Word<\/em>,\u00a0One Night at McCool\u2019s<\/em>, and\u00a0Ratched<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 a 2020 TV series based on Nurse Mildred Ratched from the\u00a0Cuckoo\u2019s Nest<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Won\u2019t drop dead on set<\/h2>\n

Now, it seems, Douglas is stepping away from Hollywood all together.<\/p>\n

Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF), the two-time Oscar winner revealed that, after nearly six decades in the business, he doesn\u2019t plan to return to acting \u2013 unless something \u201cspecial came up.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had a very busy career. Now, I have not worked since 2022, purposefully, because I realized I had to stop,\u201d he said, per\u00a0Deadline<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019d been working pretty hard for almost 60 years, and I did not want to be one of those people who dropped dead on the set.\u201d<\/p>\n

Happy to watch his wife work<\/h2>\n

Douglas, who last appeared on screen as Benjamin Franklin in 2024\u2019s Apple TV+ miniseries\u00a0Franklin<\/em>, explained that he looks forward to focusing on his personal life, according to\u00a0People<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m very happy with taking the time off. But I say I\u2019m not retired, because if something special came up, I\u2019d go back. I have no real intentions. I just like to watch my wife work,\u201d he added, referring to his Golden Globe nominated wife, Catherine Zeta-Jones, whom he married in 2000.<\/p>\n

Cancer was \u2018not a holiday\u2019<\/h2>\n

At the festival, Douglas also reflected on his battle with stage IV cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2010. After undergoing aggressive chemotherapy, he told reporters at KVIFF that he was \u201clucky to continue working,\u201d having avoided a more severe form of tongue cancer that could have cost him part of his jaw and affected his ability to speak.<\/p>\n

\u201cStage 4 cancer is not a holiday,\u201d he said. \u201cI went with the program, involving chemo and radiation, and was fortunate. The surgery would have meant not being able to talk and removing part of my jaw and that would have been limiting as an actor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Father-son film<\/h2>\n

The Golden Globe nominee is set to appear in at least one more film,\u00a0Looking Through Water<\/em>, originally called\u00a0Blood Knot<\/em>. The movie, that\u2019s still in post-production, also stars his 46-year-old son Cameron, who last appeared in the 2022 action film\u00a0Wire Room<\/em>, starring Bruce Willis.<\/p>\n
