Authorities investigating the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie say they believe she was likely \u201ctargeted,\u201d though officials are still working to confirm the motive.<\/div>\n

Chris Nanos, the sheriff of Pima County, revealed the update Thursday while warning that the suspect responsible for Guthrie\u2019s disappearance could potentially strike again.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe believe we know why he did this, and we believe that it was targeted, but we can\u2019t say we\u2019re 100% sure of that,\u201d Nanos told NBC News.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Because investigators are still piecing together the details, Nanos said it would be irresponsible to reassure the public that the suspect is no longer a threat.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSo it\u2019d be silly to tell people, \u2018Yeah, don\u2019t worry about it. You\u2019re not his target,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t think for a minute that because it happened to the Guthrie family, you\u2019re safe. No \u2014 keep your wits about you.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Guthrie disappeared on Feb. 1 from her home in Tucson, prompting an extensive search effort that has now stretched more than a month. Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not publicly identified a suspect.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The sheriff\u2019s office has also faced criticism during the investigation. Questions were raised after the area outside Guthrie\u2019s home was reportedly left unsecured, allowing reporters \u2014 and even a pizza delivery driver \u2014 to approach the front door.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Frustration has also grown among members of the public due to the lack of arrests or significant updates in the five weeks since Guthrie vanished.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
