Daniel looked at me. I raised my hand to silence him.<\/p>\n

\u201cSergio, listen to me,\u201d I said. \u201cDo you have Matthew\u2019s birth certificate?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cDo you have the complete DNA report?\u201d \u201cYes.\u201d \u201cDo you have the text messages with the threats?\u201d \u201cYears of them.\u201d \u201cThen don\u2019t argue with her. Don\u2019t insult her. Don\u2019t touch her. Gather everything up and leave with the boy if you can do it without a fight. If not, call 911 or go to the nearest family justice center immediately. This is no longer just drama between exes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel stared at me as if he didn\u2019t know who I was. Perhaps he didn\u2019t know this side of me. Honestly, neither did I. For years, I thought that if an ex ever showed up with a child, I would smash plates, cry in the bathroom, or scream at my husband. Yet there I was, in my slippers, with my hair tied back, organizing a legal defense before even finishing my morning coffee.<\/p>\n

Because my pride was one thing. A child was another. And you do not improvise when a child\u2019s life is on the line.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re in the Lincoln Park area,\u201d Sergio said. \u201cThere\u2019s a family court nearby, but I don\u2019t know what to do first.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst, protect the boy,\u201d I said. \u201cThen handle the paperwork. Do you have anyone who can go with you?\u201d \u201cMy sister lives in Evanston.\u201d \u201cCall her. And forward me everything you have. Daniel and I are heading your way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel\u2019s eyes went wide. \u201cWe are?\u201d<\/p>\n

I hung up. \u201cYes, we are.\u201d \u201cMariana, this isn\u2019t our problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shot him a look so cold he sat up straight. \u201cA woman just text you claiming her child is yours. Of course it is our problem. But we are going to handle this the right way: with proof, truth, and boundaries.\u201d<\/p>\n

Daniel lowered his gaze. \u201cAnd what if he really had been mine?\u201d The question came out tiny. Pained. Thoroughly human. For the first time since the text arrived, I saw the man behind the panic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen we would have faced it too,\u201d I told him. \u201cBut we aren\u2019t going to let Alejandra dictate our lives with a text message.\u201d<\/p>\n

We dressed in silence. On the drive over, the city seemed to move on indifferently. The traffic on the main avenue was heavy. People were buying breakfast at local stands, commuters were rushing to work. Everything continued, even though my marriage was sitting right beside me like a cracked glass.<\/p>\n

Daniel tried to take my hand. I didn\u2019t let him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a punishment,\u201d I told him. \u201cIt\u2019s just that right now, I need to manage my anger without any artificial filters.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded. \u201cI swear to you, I didn\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope so. Because if I find out you did, there won\u2019t be enough lawyers or prayers in the world to rescue you from me.\u201d He didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

We arrived at a nice residential building\u2014the kind with a doorman, well-manicured landscaping, and neighbors who greet you as if they don\u2019t hear shouting through the walls. Sergio was waiting outside, a child\u2019s backpack slung over his shoulder.<\/p>\n

He was a tall man, with deep dark circles under his eyes, a wrinkled shirt, and the expression of someone who had spent years sleeping with one eye open. Beside him stood Matthew. The boy had large eyes, messy hair, and a plastic dinosaur clutched in his hand. He didn\u2019t look as much like Daniel as he had appeared to on Facebook. In photos, you see what you fear. In person, Matthew carried Sergio\u2019s exact tired gaze.<\/p>\n

Daniel went completely still. Not like a father caught in a lie, but like an adult facing a child who hadn\u2019t asked for any of this chaos.<\/p>\n
