We need to catch them in the act.\u201d I looked at the envelope in my hands. \u201cNo. First, they\u2019re going to see me.\u201d I hung up.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\">I walked toward the stage. My dad saw me when I was already ten feet away. His smile dropped instantly. Carol went white. Lily stopped posing for a photo. I walked up the steps without trembling. \u201cGood evening,\u201d I said into the microphone. The band stopped playing. Everyone turned around.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4\">My dad approached quickly. \u201cGet down from there, Diane.\u201d \u201cWhy? Don\u2019t you want to show off your other daughter too?\u201d A murmur rippled through the hall. I pulled out my test result and held it up. \u201c98.7th percentile. I did get in. I lied to see what my father would do when he thought he could no longer use me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"5\">Carol clenched her jaw. My dad tried to snatch the paper from me, but I stepped back. \u201cAnd it worked. He kicked me out of the house. Just as he planned.\u201d Lily\u2019s face changed. \u201cDad?\u201d He turned to her. \u201cDon\u2019t listen to this nonsense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"6\">Then I played the audio. Carol\u2019s voice came through the small Bluetooth speaker I had hidden in my purse. <i data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"106\">\u201cDiane just turned eighteen, Arthur. You can finally take the house her mother left her.\u201d<\/i> The entire ballroom froze. Then my dad\u2019s voice played: <i data-path-to-node=\"6\" data-index-in-node=\"251\">\u201cWhen she fails the exam, I\u2019ll kick her out. She\u2019ll realize that she\u2019s worth nothing without me.\u201d<\/i> Someone gasped, \u201cOh, no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"7\">Carol tried to step forward, but Aunt Susan appeared by my side like a brick wall. \u201cDon\u2019t even think about it.\u201d My dad lowered his voice. \u201cDiane, turn that off. You\u2019re making a fool of yourself.\u201d \u201cNo. Making a fool of yourself is sending a stranger to sign for me while you toast to Lily.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"8\">Lily dropped her glass. It shattered on the floor. \u201cWhat?\u201d My dad looked at me with pure hatred. The mask was entirely gone. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about.\u201d \u201cYes, I do. And so does Mr. Sanders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"9\">At that moment, a man in a gray suit rushed into the ballroom, holding his cell phone. It was my mom\u2019s lawyer. Behind him were two police officers and a woman from the District Attorney\u2019s office.
