\nRamiro, pressing his hand against his shoulder, let out a bitter laugh.
\n\u201cFor twenty years you called the truth a misunderstanding.\u201d
\nMy dad looked at my mom.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou did this.\u201d
\nShe took a step forward.
\n\u201cNo. You did this. I just finally stopped covering it up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I looked at her.
\n\u201cYou knew?\u201d<\/p>\n

My mom broke down.
\n\u201cYes.\u201d
\nThe word hurt like another gunshot.
\n\u201cYou knew Ramiro was my dad?\u201d<\/p>\n

She cried openly.
\n\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you let me believe he was a thief?\u201d
\nMy dad shouted:<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I could have taken you away from her!\u201d
\nThe police restrained him.<\/p>\n

He struggled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI gave you everything! That house, that name, that life!\u201d<\/p>\n

My mom answered him:
\n\u201cYou gave us fear. Everything else, you stole.\u201d<\/p>\n

The yellow folder was handed over to the District Attorney\u2019s office that very night. Ramiro was taken to the hospital under police guard. I sat in a cold room, my hands stained with his blood and my head full of questions that no one could answer without breaking me further.<\/p>\n

My mom sat next to me.<\/p>\n

\u201cForgive me, son.\u201d
\nI didn\u2019t look at her.
\n\u201cWhy did you marry him?\u201d<\/p>\n

It took her a moment to answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause your grandfather was dead, Ramiro was in prison, I was pregnant with you, and Arthur threatened to have him killed inside the state pen if I said a single word. He told me he could take you from my arms, too. Everyone believed him.<\/p>\n

Nobody believed me.\u201d
\n\u201cRamiro did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cRamiro was locked away.\u201d<\/p>\n

I covered my face.
\nFor years, I thought my mom was weak for letting my dad humiliate Ramiro.<\/p>\n

Now I understood she lived life monitoring a bomb.<\/p>\n

If she spoke, Arthur would destroy Ramiro.<\/p>\n

And even so, when he got out of prison, she was the only one who ran to hug him.
\nThe only one who knew the guilty man was sitting at our table.<\/p>\n

The investigation uncovered everything slowly.
\nNot like in the movies.<\/p>\n

Not with a single saving piece of evidence.
\nBut with yellowed papers.
\nWith damaged recordings.<\/p>\n

With compared signatures.
\nWith an old guard found in another state, who finally confessed that Arthur had paid him to testify against Ramiro.<\/p>\n
