\u201cCongratulations, Ramiro. You\u2019ve gone and broken his head.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d my uncle said. \u201cYou\u2019ve been filling it with lies since the day he was born.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at Ramiro.
\nThe man from the tin shed.
\nThe inmate everyone called a thief.<\/p>\n

The one who would give me half his bread when he thought I wasn\u2019t noticing.
\n\u201cAre you my dad?\u201d I repeated.
\nThis time, he answered.<\/p>\n

\nSomething collapsed inside me.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t instant love.
\nIt wasn\u2019t relief.<\/p>\n

It felt as if someone had ripped up the floorboards and exposed all the years buried underneath.<\/p>\n

My dad stepped toward me.
\n\u201cGive me those papers.\u201d
\nI backed up.<\/p>\n

Salas moved faster. He tried to snatch the folder from me, but Ramiro shoved him. My dad raised the gun. I screamed.
\nThe gunshot echoed through the office.
\nRamiro fell against the desk.<\/p>\n

For a second, I thought he had been hit in the chest.
\nThen I saw the blood on his shoulder.
\n\u201cRamiro!\u201d<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t say uncle.
\nI didn\u2019t say dad.
\nJust his name.<\/p>\n

I grabbed a wrench from the floor and threw it with all my might. It struck my dad on the wrist. The gun dropped and slid under a chair.<\/p>\n

Salas tried to run.
\nHe didn\u2019t make it.
\nThe office door swung open, and two police officers in vests burst in, followed by a woman in a dark suit.<\/p>\n

And right behind them was my mom.
\nHer face was pale, but her eyes were steady.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s over, Arthur,\u201d she said.
\nMy dad froze.
\n\u201cClara\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t call me that.\u201d
\nI had never heard my mom speak to him with such calm.<\/p>\n
