I thought about the times I had walked through those stalls, comparing tomato prices, bargaining for avocados, and carrying heavy bags just so this family could say later: \u201cMelanie cooks so delicious.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"49\">They never said: \u201cThat must have been expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"50\">They never said: \u201cShe must be so tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"52\">Ryan tried to laugh it off.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"53\">\u201cSee? I told you. Dramatic. It\u2019s my birthday, and she wants to ruin it because she got some crazy idea in her head.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"54\">\u201cNo,\u201d I said. \u201cI just want to obey you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"55\">That caught him off guard more than any scream could have.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"56\">Mrs. Helen walked up to the table.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"57\">\u201cSon, did you actually say that to her?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"58\">Ryan turned to her with an almost childlike face.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"59\">\u201cI was angry, Mom. Sometimes people say things harshly. But she knows how I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"60\">\u201cYes,\u201d I replied. \u201cThat\u2019s why I did the math.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"61\">I opened the box I had under my chair.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"62\">I pulled out a green folder.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"63\">It wasn\u2019t fancy. It was just a regular office folder with a white label and bent corners. But inside lay months of the absolute truth.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"64\">Receipts from the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"65\">Invoices from the butcher shop.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"66\">Receipts from the local bakery.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"67\">Utility bills.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"68\">Bank transfers for electricity and water.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"69\">Receipts for flour, butter, and sugar for my baking.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"70\">A notebook where I recorded every cake sold, every pastry delivered, every decorated dessert I made in the early hours of the morning while Ryan slept, claiming that I \u201cjust helped out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"71\">I put everything on the table.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"72\">\u201cThis is what I paid for over the last six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"73\">Mrs. Helen picked up a receipt.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"74\">Then another.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"75\">Her glasses slid down her nose.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"76\">\u201cRyan\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"77\">He waved his hands dismissively.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"78\">\u201cNow you\u2019re going to turn my mom against me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"79\">\u201cNo. Numbers don\u2019t have a mother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"80\">Tyler let out a cough that sounded like a laugh.
