I drove back to the gated community with frozen hands. The Arizona sky was already bruised purple, and in the distance, the palm trees looked like giant skeletons against the dusk. We passed streets where people were heading out for coffee, for dinner, at places that smelled of grilled meat and toasted corn.<\/p>\n

Everything felt offensively normal.<\/p>\n

At the house, the security guard let us in with his mouth agape. The detective demanded the entry and exit logs since Friday. The man began to sweat. \u201cMrs. Carla said no records were to be handed over without authorization.\u201d \u201cI am the authorization,\u201d the detective said, flashing her badge.<\/p>\n

We entered. The air was still hot and stale. In the kitchen, the wine glass with the lipstick stain was exactly where I\u2019d seen it. On the table, the family photo smiled with an unbearable cruelty.<\/p>\n

The detectives checked the guest room. They took photos of the lock, the empty bottle, the napkin. I stood in the doorway, hugging myself.<\/p>\n

Then I heard a buzz. It was coming from the study bookshelf. \u201cThere\u2019s a camera,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

The detective stepped closer. It was a small camera, hidden among ceramic ornaments. It was pointed at the hallway. At the hallway where Diego\u2019s door was.<\/p>\n

\u201cCarla was recording,\u201d I whispered.<\/p>\n

The detective disconnected the device and bagged it as evidence. We kept searching. In the desk drawer, we found a folder with printed pages. At first, I thought they were bank statements. Then I saw my name.<\/p>\n

The air left my lungs. There were screenshots of my old posts. A photo from years ago, when I cried over my divorce and wrote that I felt lonely. Cropped conversations where I\u2019d said Diego was like a son to me. Everything arranged to make me look obsessed.<\/p>\n

The detective turned to me. \u201cDon\u2019t say anything else without a lawyer once this escalates.\u201d \u201cEscalates?\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, my phone buzzed. It was Carla. No message. A call. The detective held up a hand. \u201cAnswer it. Speakerphone.\u201d<\/p>\n

I obeyed.<\/p>\n

\u201cPaula,\u201d Carla said, with a poisonous calm. \u201cWhere is my son?\u201d My throat went dry. \u201cIn the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence. Then, a small laugh. \u201cDo you realize what you\u2019ve just done?\u201d \u201cI took him out of a locked room.\u201d \u201cYou broke into my house without permission and took a minor. That\u2019s called kidnapping, honey.\u201d<\/p>\n

The detective gestured for me to keep going. \u201cYou asked me to come over.\u201d \u201cTo feed the dog,\u201d Carla replied. \u201cNot to rummage through my rooms. Diego was being punished. He\u2019s my son. You\u2019re nobody.\u201d<\/p>\n

I felt blood pounding in my temples. \u201cYou left him without water.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re exaggerating. You always exaggerate. That\u2019s why Rick didn\u2019t want you around anymore. That\u2019s why he signed the restraining order.\u201d<\/p>\n
