The glovebox stuck, and when I yanked it, a pawn ticket slid out. 300 dollars, for a lady\u2019s diamond ring.<\/p>\n<p>My ring. The one I thought I\u2019d lost cleaning last fall. Marshall had told me not to worry, rings always turn up.<\/p>\n<p>Under the ticket sat a plastic motel keycard in a paper sleeve. Room 118. The Cardinal Inn, out on Route 9.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019d been married 34 years. I sat in the driveway with the engine off and dialed the number on the sleeve. I\u2019d misplace my husband\u2019s reservation date, I told them. The clerk checked. Every other Saturday since March, ma\u2019am. Same room. He\u2019s usually here with someone else.<\/p>\n<p>The phone slipped against my ear. The plastic felt cheap and warm. I stared through the windshield at our neat lawn and the stack of brown mulch bags sitting by the back bumper. Thirty-four years of breakfasts across from each other. Thirty-four years of folding his work shirts and listening to him talk about his commute. All of it balanced on a stack of pine needles and a piece of greasy paper.<\/p>\n<p>I set the phone in the passenger seat and pulled the keycard out of its sleeve again. It was blue with a faded white room number stamped near the corner. Route 9 was a twenty-minute drive from our driveway. The Cardinal Inn was one of those squat cinder-block motels with orange doors and gravel parking lots where trucks parked backward so nobody could read the plates.<\/p>\n<div class=\"r34c8-ic-ad\" data-slot=\"1\">\n<div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"2001085\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Marshall had <span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-keyword emo-style-bold\">used<\/span> that truck every Saturday for months. He always left early to get a head start on yard work or hardware store runs. He came home smelling of damp earth and sawdust, kissing the top of my head while I stood at the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>My finger felt light and strange where the ring <span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-keyword emo-style-bold\">used<\/span> to sit. Last November, when I pulled the kitchen cabinets apart looking for it, Marshall had helped me crawl around on the linoleum. He looked under the stove. He checked the garbage disposal. He told me not to beat myself up because jewelry slips off when your hands get <span class=\"emo-highlight emo-hl-keyword emo-style-bold\">cold<\/span>.
