\u201cOf course you chose today.\u201d<\/p>\n

I heard Victoria whisper, \u201cThe ambulance will bring sirens. Tell the staff she is drunk.\u201d<\/p>\n

My grip tightened around the phone.<\/p>\n

Mara remained connected through an encrypted open line, recording every word.<\/p>\n

Celeste raised her voice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve always been jealous of me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost smiled.<\/p>\n

Even then, they needed an audience.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m in labor,\u201d I said. \u201cThis is your last chance to unlock the door.\u201d<\/p>\n

Victoria answered, \u201cDo not threaten us in our own vineyard.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sentence mattered.<\/p>\n

The vineyard was not legally theirs.<\/p>\n

Three years earlier, Bellacourt had nearly collapsed beneath its debts.<\/p>\n

Victoria persuaded me to place the estate into a restructuring trust, claiming it would preserve the family legacy.<\/p>\n

She never read the controlling documents.<\/p>\n

I had contributed the rescue capital through a private inheritance from my mother.<\/p>\n

In exchange, the trust gave me authority to remove management for fraud, criminal behavior, or reckless endangerment.<\/p>\n

They believed the money had come from Evan.<\/p>\n
