Victoria called me \u201cthe little accountant.\u201d<\/p>\n

Celeste joked that I probably counted grapes for a living.<\/p>\n

Evan laughed with them, then apologized when we were alone, as though private regret erased public humiliation.<\/p>\n

What none of them ever asked was which government agency employed me.<\/p>\n

I was a forensic auditor for the state attorney general\u2019s organized-fraud division.<\/p>\n

For nine months, I had watched Bellacourt Vineyard funnel money through fake vendors, forged payroll files, and shell companies registered to dead relatives.<\/p>\n

I remained silent because Evan swore he knew nothing.<\/p>\n

Two weeks earlier, I discovered his signature on every transfer.<\/p>\n

A violent cramp dropped me to my knees.<\/p>\n

I reached inside my purse and pulled out the emergency phone assigned to me for field operations.<\/p>\n
