They hooked him up to sticky monitors. He wailed when the nurses prodded him, and I openly cried right along with him, but this time I definitely didn\u2019t walk away. I asked a million questions. I jotted down specialists\u2019 names. I memorized his feeding schedules. I forced them to clearly explain exactly what a heart condition entailed, what physical therapies he would eventually need, and what specific checkups were coming down the pipeline.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"35\">Right at eight o\u2019clock, my mom rushed in. She came practically sprinting through the doors, her hair a total mess, her eyes bloodshot red. My older sister was right on her heels, lugging a massive tote bag stuffed with clean clothes and bakery pastries, as if a box of carbs could somehow sustain us through a tragedy. My mom spotted me tightly holding Julian and froze in her tracks. You all kept telling me it was going to be way too much for me to handle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"38\">My mom squeezed her eyes shut in deep shame. \u201cYes. And I was completely wrong. I looked at you struggling with your leg, dealing with your physical pain, carrying all the heavy burdens you\u2019ve always carried, and I stupidly thought I was actively protecting you by constantly feeding your worst fears. But a mother absolutely doesn\u2019t protect her daughter by teaching her to abandon her own heart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"39\">Nobody spoke for a long time. Julian smacked his little lips in his sleep. My mom smiled softly through her tears. \u201cHe honestly looks exactly like you did when you were born.\u201d I let out a wet laugh. \u201cMom, he literally only has my nose.\u201d \u201cWell, that is more than enough for him to be incredibly stubborn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"40\">I didn\u2019t go home that night. I stayed parked in a rigid, uncomfortable hospital chair right next to the open incubator where Julian was sleeping. My prosthetic leg throbbed. My lower back burned. My arms ached terribly from constantly holding him. And yet, I had never, ever felt so completely whole.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"41\">The very next day, Susan returned with a thick stack of new paperwork. She thoroughly explained that there would be mandatory home visits, psychological evaluations, and strict home inspections. She definitely didn\u2019t frame it as a threat, but rather as a necessary path forward.
