I gave him my word.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Private.<\/p>\n<h1><strong>The word slipped beneath my ribs like a blad:e.<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Leo had become very still in the cart, watching me with the wide-eyed fear he always showed when adults used the wrong tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s okay, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was not okay.<\/p>\n<p>I stared at Nora, memorizing her face, the paint beneath her thumbnail, and the loose braid resting over her shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Then I spun the cart around and hurried out of the store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy?\u201d Leo called.<\/p>\n<p>I did not answer.<\/p>\n<p>I kept pushing until we reached the parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>My fingers shook uncontrollably as I strapped him into his car seat.<\/p>\n<p>Once I was behind the wheel, I pulled out my phone and called Mark.<\/p>\n<p>The call went directly to voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>I called again.<\/p>\n<p>Voicemail.<\/p>\n<p>On the third attempt, the same polite recorded voice invited me to leave a message, but I could not find a single sentence that felt large enough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere is Daddy?\u201d Leo asked from the back seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIs Daddy in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked at him through the rearview mirror.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy would Daddy be in trouble?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated, chewing the inside of his cheek exactly the way Mark did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wasn\u2019t supposed to tell about the lady.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDaddy said it\u2019s a surprise. He said if I told, the surprise would be broken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The drive home lasted only seven minutes, but it felt like an hour.<\/p>\n<p>All I could picture was the locked guest room.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived, I left the groceries in the car and carried Leo inside on my hip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay down here,\u201d I told him, placing him on the couch and switching on the television. \u201cMommy needs to check something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I climbed the stairs two at a time.<\/p>\n<p>The guest room door remained locked.<\/p>\n<p>I shook the handle.<\/p>\n<p>Twisted it until my wrist hurt.<\/p>\n<p>Then I pressed my forehead against the wood and tried to breathe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark,\u201d I whispered into the empty hallway. \u201cWhat did you do?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Small footsteps sounded behind me.<\/p>\n<p>Leo had followed, one hand curled around the banister.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMommy,\u201d he said in the overly loud whisper five-year-olds believed was quiet. \u201cI\u2019m not supposed to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLeo, honey, please go back downstairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s a surprise inside.\u201d He climbed the final two steps. \u201cDaddy has the key. He keeps it in his work bag.
