A few aunts and uncles smiled in agreement.

Helga looked right at me with fake pity.

“The poor dear. After all these barren years, she’ll finally get to play mommy.”

Sophie looked down at her lap, fighting back tears.

A terrifying, icy calm washed over me.

I set the heavy glass pitcher down in the center of the table.

Then, I slowly untied my apron and let it drop to the floor.

Julian frowned.

“Claire, what are you doing?”

I stared right into his eyes.

“I’m just making sure everyone at the table can hear me clearly.”

I spoke in flawless, clear German.

The massive dining room went dead silent.

Marta’s jaw literally dropped.

Helga froze like a statue, her wine glass hovering inches from her mouth.

Julian looked like the hardwood floor had just opened up and swallowed him whole.

“Yes,” I continued in German. “I understand German perfectly. I understood your little jokes, the cruel insults, the baby, the illegal contract, and every detail of your psychotic master plan.”

Klaus slammed his glass down.

“Claire, do not create a hysterical scene in my home.”

“You created the scene, Klaus,” I fired back. “I just made sure there was an audience.”

Right on cue, the front door swung open.

Barbara walked into the dining room, flanked by two representatives from the women’s advocacy group.

Sophie stood up immediately and walked over to stand right beside me.

Julian shoved his chair back.

“What the hell is this?”

“My divorce attorney.”

He stared at me in horror.

“You hired a lawyer?”

Barbara tossed a thick binder onto the dining table.

“My client is filing for divorce effective immediately. She is also turning over substantial evidence of financial misconduct, emotional abuse, coercion, and an organized conspiracy to force a pregnant woman to sign away her parental rights to a child.”

Helga stood up, her face red.

“That child belongs to my son.”

“That baby is a human being, not a piece of property,” I snapped. “And she is certainly not a consolation prize for my fertility struggles.”

The words burned my throat as I said them out loud.

But for the very first time in my life, I said them without an ounce of shame.

“I wanted to be a mother more than anything in this world. But I would rather die than steal a baby from another woman just so your pathetic son can sweep his affair under the rug.”

Julian took a desperate step toward me.

“Claire, please listen to me. This whole thing got way more complicated than I ever intended.”

I let out a dry laugh.

“You intended to hand me your mistress’s baby and watch me cry tears of gratitude.”

“I was just trying to give you the family you always wanted!”

“No, Julian. You were trying to keep the lifestyle you wanted.”

His jaw clenched.

“I love you.”

“You loved the convenience of me. I paid half the mortgage, I made you look like a devoted husband, I cooked for your snobby family, and I kept my mouth shut while you all treated me like the hired help.”

“That is a lie.”

I held up my smartphone.

“Would you like me to play the audio files for the room?”

He stopped dead.

Klaus tried to puff out his chest and take control.

“You are a guest in my home.”

Barbara opened a second manila folder.

“And you, sir, are recorded on tape advising your son on how to commit fraud to avoid child support while extorting the mother of his child. I highly suggest you sit down and remain quiet.”

For the first time in his arrogant life, Klaus obeyed a woman without arguing.

The luncheon quickly devolved into screaming matches, panicked phone calls to defense attorneys, and Helga shrieking at Sophie to hand over the original contract.

She didn’t.

I walked out the front door with Sophie right beside me.

Julian chased me all the way down the driveway.

“Claire, we can fix this. Please.”

“I’m already fixing it.”

“You’re throwing away ten years of marriage over one stupid affair?”

I stopped and turned around to face him.

“I’m throwing it away because when you thought I was too stupid to understand you, you showed me exactly what kind of monster you really are.”

He had no answer.

The divorce proceedings were brutal.

Julian’s legal team claimed I had completely fabricated his intentions. His family testified that I had secretly learned German just to maliciously entrap them.

But high-definition audio recordings don’t lie.

During a deposition, the entire room listened to Julian’s voice say, “Claire is useful. She’ll never leave me.”

I watched the color drain from his face when his own arrogant words echoed off the courtroom walls.

Useful.

That was my entire identity to him.

Not a beloved wife.

A useful appliance.

Sophie also filed a massive civil suit against the family for extortion and emotional distress. Backed by the advocacy group, she moved into a cozy apartment near her sister and got a job as a receptionist at a medical clinic.

We didn’t become best friends overnight.

Honestly, some days, looking at her swelling belly felt like a knife to the chest.

I would see the exact life I had prayed for, and a wave of bitter anger would hit me, before I reminded myself exactly who that anger belonged to.

Sophie had made a terrible mistake.

So had I.

But she wasn’t the sociopath who built a conspiracy out of my deepest grief.

Julian was.

The baby arrived on a stormy Tuesday morning in August.

Sophie called me from the maternity ward because her sister’s flight was delayed.

“You really don’t have to come, Claire,” she cried. “I don’t even know why I dialed your number.”

I sat on the edge of the mattress in my tiny new apartment.
