February: Pickup truck transmission blew. David sold the truck for scrap before I could secretly arrange for a mechanic to fix it. Sent the cash to his prepaid bus pass account instead.

August: Major roof leak. David delayed the contractor repairs because my expensive medication was due. Paid the roofer’s deposit anonymously through Claire’s cousin.

October: Noah’s braces. Covered the final $1,200 balance by filtering it through a fake dental assistance charity fund.

</ins>

November: Mortgage payment. David was short. Payment completed anonymously via cashier’s check.

I literally couldn’t draw a breath into my lungs.

“I worked overtime to pay those bills,” I stammered.

</ins>

“You paid some of them,” Sarah corrected me gently. “When you inevitably fell short, Mr. Vance frequently covered the difference by routing the funds through my law office to maintain his anonymity.”

“With what money?!”

Mark let out a booming laugh.

“Exactly! The guy was flat broke!”

Sarah calmly closed the blue ledger.

“Mr. Vance legally owned two massive commercial storage facilities near Boulder, a highly lucrative parcel of mineral rights in Weld County, and a 40% controlling interest in a regional produce distribution warehouse established by his own father.”

The living room went graveyard silent.

Mark’s arrogant smirk vanished.

“What the hell did you just say?”

“The assets were heavily shielded through a blind private trust.”

“That is literally impossible,” Brenda gasped. “We scoured his financial records after Mom died!”

Sarah looked at her with eyes like ice.

“You scoured the decoy checking accounts he intentionally allowed you to find.”

Mark jumped up from the sofa.

“Are you telling me my father was a multi-millionaire?!”

“He chose to live incredibly modestly. That is not entirely synonymous with being poor.”

Claire gripped my forearm so tightly her nails dug into my skin.

“Why didn’t he just tell us?” she wept.
