I unfolded the paper with two fingers. The kitchen at home felt very far away, and the little clicking radiator in my head was louder than Ray’s cash register. On the back of the page, in Arthur’s square, heavy hand, he had written: *She must keep this until she can stand.*

“The payments totaled three thousand two hundred forty dollars over twelve years,” Ray said, his voice dropping down into his chest. “Your husband kept that girl’s wedding ring in my safe through three recessions and a stroke, Eleanor. And he never missed a December.”

I stood there by the loading dock with my hand still resting on the tailgate of his old Ford, and for a second the pawn shop walls seemed to tilt sideways. Arthur had never bought himself a new coat in twenty years. He patched his own work gloves with heavy nylon thread and drove a truck that leaked oil on the gravel every time he pulled out of the drive. When the transmission went out in ninety-nine, he walked three miles to the hardware store in the sleet rather than spend twenty dollars on a cab. Yet every December, while I was downstairs cutting coupons out of the Sunday paper and complaining about the price of beef roast, Arthur was walking down to 4th Street with four crisp twenty-dollar bills in his shirt pocket.

“Why didn’t he ever tell me?” I asked. My voice didn’t sound like mine anymore. It sounded small and dry, like someone else talking in an empty room.

“You knew how Arthur was about the parsonage after old Pastor Vance passed,” Ray said, leaning back and crossing his arms. “He thought people ought to be able to keep what was theirs when the world went sideways. He wasn’t one for talking about doing right. He just went ahead and did it.”

I looked down at the last receipt in the stack. The date was six days before Arthur had his second spell in the kitchen. The ink was still dark. The amount was two hundred eighty-five dollars. Underneath the customer’s name, Arthur had added a small note in the margin that Ray hadn’t mentioned. *Almost home.*

“You want to sell the saw, Eleanor?” Ray asked gently after a minute. “Or are you taking the truck back home?”
