CHECK NORTH FACE BELOW EAGLE POINT. TWO LIVES AT RISK.

The message led the helicopter directly to my ledge.

Someone knew Michael’s plan and wanted me found.

Or wanted investigators to believe I had been found by chance.

The sender used a phone purchased under Lydia Carter’s name.

Michael’s dead wife had saved my life.

Before the memorial, investigators also searched our home.

They found a second phone hidden beneath Michael’s desk. It contained photographs of the cliff taken during three earlier trips. Each image marked a different fall point, the depth below it, and the hours when the trail had the fewest visitors.

A calendar entry labeled C FINAL listed the storm forecast.

There were messages from Ashley reminding Michael to make me wear a red coat so search teams would focus on the wrong side of the mountain, where a strip of red fabric had already been planted.

In our garage, police found a box containing my old medicine bottles, copied signatures, and a draft letter that appeared to be written by me. The letter said pregnancy had made me depressed and that I no longer wanted to live.

Michael had prepared not only my death, but also the story people would tell about me afterward.

Torres placed the forged letter on my hospital table.

“He expected grief to protect him,” she said.

I looked at Ethan sleeping behind the glass.

“Then let him grieve in public,” I replied. “Let every camera record what he does when he thinks no one can stop him.”

Two weeks after the fall, Michael held a memorial service for Ethan and me.

My body had not been recovered, but he insisted on a funeral. Price believed he needed death certificates before the policies could pay. The service gave him public pressure and sympathetic witnesses.

I watched through a hidden camera inside a van across from the church.

Michael stood beside an empty white coffin. Ashley wore black and held his arm.

He did not know that I was less than fifty yards away.

Torres had placed microphones inside the private family room. Before the service, we heard Ashley ask, “How long until payment?”

Michael answered, “Pierce says the judge signs Friday.”

“And the baby?”

“Dead with her.”

Ashley lowered her voice. “You didn’t check.”

“There was no way she survived.”

“You said that about Lydia.”

Silence followed.

Then Michael said, “Lydia was different.”

Those three words were enough to reopen more than an old file.

They were not enough to prove murder.

I wanted to walk into the church and expose him. Torres stopped me.

“Wait until he believes the money is approved. Then he may contact the others.”

So I waited.

During the memorial, Michael stood before our families and described me as fragile. He said pregnancy made me confused. He suggested I walked toward the cliff on purpose.

My mother began sobbing.

I pressed my fist against my mouth to keep from shouting.

Then Michael spoke about Ethan.

“My son never had the chance to see the world,” he said.

He paused for the cameras.

Behind the coffin, Ashley smiled.

It was small.

But the hidden camera captured it.

After the service, Michael and Ashley entered the private room. A third person joined them.

Dr. Pierce.

He gave Michael a folder containing temporary death certificates.

“The policies can begin processing tomorrow,” Pierce said.

Michael opened a bottle of champagne.

That was when I entered.

I wore a brace on my wrist and walked with a cane, but I walked.

Michael dropped his glass.

Ashley screamed.

Dr. Pierce reached for the folder.

Torres and two officers stepped in behind me.

“No,” I said. “Leave it on the table.”

Michael stared at my stomach.

“Where is the baby?”

Not Are you hurt?

Not How are you alive?

Only the question that mattered to the policy.

“Ethan is alive.”

His face collapsed.

Ashley moved away from him.

Michael pointed at her. “This was her idea.”

She laughed once. “You pushed your wife.”

“And you chose the cliff.”

Officers separated them.

Price presented warrants for attempted murder, conspiracy, insurance fraud, and falsifying medical records.

Michael looked at me as handcuffs closed around his wrists.

“You have no proof I pushed you.”

I took out my phone.

The screen was cracked, but its cloud backup had preserved an audio recording. I had activated a voice memo during our argument because Michael had been threatening me for weeks.

His voice filled the room:

Don’t worry. You and the baby won’t suffer long.

Michael stopped breathing.

For the first time, I saw real fear in him.

Then Torres’s phone rang.

She listened, and her face changed.

""

“What happened?” I asked.

She looked at Michael.

“Ethan has been taken from the neonatal unit.”

The hospital camera showed a woman leaving with him twenty minutes earlier.

She wore a nurse’s uniform and carried documents authorizing a transfer.

The signature at the bottom belonged to me.

And the woman’s face belonged to Lydia Carter.

Michael’s first wife.

The woman everyone believed had been dead for seven years.
