Laura stood.<\/p>\n

As she walked toward the cockpit, memories she had spent eighteen months trying to bury followed her with every step.<\/p>\n

But she had no idea that what waited beyond the cockpit door was connected directly to the tragedy that had destroyed her old life.<\/p>\n

PART 2<\/p>\n

The cockpit door opened.<\/p>\n

Laura immediately smelled overheated electronics, coffee, and tension.<\/p>\n

Captain Andrew Vance sat in the left seat, both hands tight around the controls.<\/p>\n

Beside him, the first officer was unconscious with an oxygen mask covering his face.<\/p>\n

Andrew looked at Laura\u2019s casual clothes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have military flight experience?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat aircraft?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cF-16 Falcons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen did you last fly?\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout eighteen months ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

The captain frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI need someone current, not someone relying on old experience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Laura could answer, the entire aircraft suddenly began vibrating.<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t normal turbulence.<\/p>\n

The movement came in a repeated mechanical rhythm.<\/p>\n

Laura\u2019s eyes immediately moved toward the flight instruments.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow long has the control column been doing that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout ten minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTell me exactly what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew pointed toward several warning displays.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe autopilot disconnected unexpectedly. Then the flight control computer started generating conflicting errors. A few minutes later, my first officer said his arm was going numb and suddenly collapsed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura looked at the unconscious man.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid the two of you eat the same meal?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. He brought coffee from the airport.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnyone else sick?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura studied the instruments.<\/p>\n

Her uniform was gone.<\/p>\n

Her military career was supposedly finished.<\/p>\n

But the instincts built during years inside fighter cockpits returned almost immediately.<\/p>\n

The aircraft suddenly drifted right.<\/p>\n

Andrew pulled against the controls.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t fight it,\u201d Laura warned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have to stop the bank.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You\u2019re fighting bad computer input. The system is correcting against you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew looked at her.<\/p>\n

Laura pointed toward the control system.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsolate one of the secondary flight channels.\u201d<\/p>\n

For half a second, Andrew hesitated.<\/p>\n

Then he trusted her.<\/p>\n

He disconnected the channel.<\/p>\n

The aircraft gave one violent shudder.<\/p>\n

Then the vibration disappeared.<\/p>\n

Andrew stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were right.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura didn\u2019t respond.<\/p>\n

They still had bigger problems.<\/p>\n

A powerful storm covered the radar ahead.<\/p>\n

Fuel reserves were shrinking.<\/p>\n

Their first officer remained unconscious.<\/p>\n

Then a doctor who had volunteered from the passenger cabin appeared at the cockpit entrance.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaptain, I examined your first officer. I don\u2019t believe this is a normal medical collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n

Andrew turned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHis symptoms are consistent with chemical poisoning.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the cockpit.<\/p>\n

Laura immediately looked toward the center console.<\/p>\n

Something was missing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhere is his coffee thermos?\u201d<\/p>\n

The flight attendant looked around.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura\u2019s stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

The broken flight-control system.<\/p>\n

An incapacitated first officer.<\/p>\n

And now evidence disappearing from the cockpit.<\/p>\n

Those were no longer random coincidences.<\/p>\n

\u201cLock the cockpit door,\u201d Laura said.<\/p>\n

Andrew looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think someone did this intentionally?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think somebody wanted your first officer unable to fly.\u201d<\/p>\n

The aircraft began descending toward an emergency airport in northern Spain.<\/p>\n

Then another warning appeared.<\/p>\n

Hydraulic pressure controlling the right landing gear began dropping.<\/p>\n

Almost immediately afterward, the cockpit keypad sounded.<\/p>\n

Someone outside was attempting to gain access.<\/p>\n

Andrew checked the camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s Richard Sterling.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDirector of Flight Operations for the airline. He\u2019s traveling in first class.\u201d<\/p>\n

The lead flight attendant called through the interphone.<\/p>\n

\u201cCaptain, do not open the door. Mr. Sterling is demanding to enter and says his executive position gives him authority.\u201d<\/p>\n

Laura\u2019s expression hardened.<\/p>\n
