The folder began with a certified copy of my settlement agreement.<\/p>\n

The amount printed near the bottom was $186,400.<\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/p>\n

Then I read it again.<\/p>\n

The figure was correct.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Because my injuries were severe and the company\u2019s safety violations were well documented, its insurer had agreed to a large settlement rather than risk a trial.<\/p>\n

The $186,400 was the amount remaining after medical expenses and attorney\u2019s fees.<\/p>\n

Arthur had told me there was barely enough left to buy a used car.<\/p>\n

I turned the page.<\/p>\n

The settlement had been placed in a court-approved custodial account for my benefit. Arthur was required to use the money only for my medical, educational, and living needs. When I turned 18, control was supposed to pass directly to me.<\/p>\n

Instead, Arthur submitted false medical invoices and forged court correspondence to justify large withdrawals.<\/p>\n

Truck\u2014$4,800.<\/i> College tuition\u2014$6,200.<\/i><\/p>\n

Arthur had bought Warren a new pickup shortly after my settlement. Later, he paid Warren\u2019s first year of college.<\/p>\n

At the time, Arthur claimed he had received a work bonus.<\/p>\n

Now I knew whose money he had used.<\/p>\n

Warren had not merely carried an envelope because he was frightened.<\/p>\n

He had benefited.<\/p>\n

The final page was another note from Mom.<\/p>\n

The woman outside Miller\u2019s Grocery told the police that Arthur pushed you. She withdrew her statement 3 days later after Rick paid her $2,000.<\/i><\/p>\n

I told him about the storage unit.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey can voluntarily place a temporary hold. If they refuse, I\u2019ll request an emergency preservation order. The risk that the boxes could be sold to strangers or destroyed should justify urgent court action.\u201d<\/p>\n

I gave him Warren\u2019s full name and phone number.<\/p>\n

Then I returned to the lobby.<\/p>\n

Warren stood as soon as he saw the folder in my arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre we finished?\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cDid you know Arthur stole my settlement?\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes moved toward the documents.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaggie, lower your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n

I held up the ledger.<\/p>\n

\u201cArthur bought your truck and paid your tuition with my money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warren went pale.<\/p>\n

The answer hurt more than a denial.<\/p>\n

He glanced at the bank doors.<\/p>\n

The word seemed to silence the entire lobby.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen explain it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Warren looked toward the doors again.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

The pain in my leg seemed to sharpen.<\/p>\n
