For one minute, grief stopped fighting us.<\/p>\n

Then, a few weeks later, I heard Violet talking to Mark\u2019s aunt in my living room.<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

She looked at Cecelia.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou wake up every morning and see him in her. What do I get?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet froze.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou had me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her expression crumpled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI loved you too, Violet.\u201d<\/p>\n

She covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ve spent weeks making me the enemy because that\u2019s easier than accepting that Mark made a choice you couldn\u2019t control.\u201d<\/p>\n

She shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wasn\u2019t himself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knew you would say that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet looked up sharply.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

I reached for my laptop.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark left me something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face went pale.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he had something to say, he should have said it while he was alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed play.<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s voice filled the room.<\/p>\n

\u201cDonation was my choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet closed her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom, if you\u2019re hearing this, you\u2019re probably furious. You loved me before anybody else did. But loving me doesn\u2019t mean you get to decide which choices belonged to me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody spoke.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make Sally prove that she loved me by agreeing with you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

\u201cAnd don\u2019t put Cecelia in the middle. She isn\u2019t something I left behind. She\u2019s Sally\u2019s daughter and mine, and she gets to become herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTurn it off,\u201d Violet whispered.<\/p>\n

I did.<\/p>\n

Then I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want Cecelia to know you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet began crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you will never tell her that I made her father do this. And you will never make her responsible for how much you miss him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet wiped her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know who I am without him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither do I, Violet.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at Cecelia.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is harder than anything I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I kissed my daughter\u2019s forehead.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut she doesn\u2019t need us to know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

Six months later, Violet sat on my living-room rug while Cecelia wrestled with a wooden block.<\/p>\n

Our relationship wasn\u2019t magically repaired.<\/p>\n

But it was healing.<\/p>\n

Violet asked before visiting now.<\/p>\n

She asked before picking Cecelia up.<\/p>\n

And when she missed Mark, she said she missed Mark instead of turning that grief into something Cecelia or I had to fix.<\/p>\n

That afternoon, Cecelia grabbed the block so tightly her knuckles turned white.<\/p>\n

Violet smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cLook at that grip.\u201d<\/p>\n

I laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet looked at me.<\/p>\n

Then she looked back at Cecelia.<\/p>\n

For a second, I saw the old instinct return.<\/p>\n

The need to find her son in every little thing our daughter did.<\/p>\n

Then Violet slowly shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gently touched Cecelia\u2019s tiny hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s hers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cecelia squealed and threw the block straight into Violet\u2019s lap.<\/p>\n

Violet laughed.<\/p>\n

So did I.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since Mark died, neither of us needed Cecelia to prove that he was still here.<\/p>\n

We could miss him.<\/p>\n

We could love him.<\/p>\n
