\u201cBecause we\u2019re here for Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I walked away.<\/p>\n

I thought silence was kindness.<\/p>\n

By that evening, silence had become something else.<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s aunt approached me near the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWas he taking anything that affected his judgment?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cViolet said maybe he wasn\u2019t thinking clearly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMark knew exactly what he wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m only asking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. You\u2019re asking whether I manipulated my dying husband into something he didn\u2019t want.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked away.<\/p>\n

That night, I went directly into Cecelia\u2019s nursery.<\/p>\n

I opened my laptop.<\/p>\n

Then I plugged in the flash drive.<\/p>\n

Mark appeared on the screen.<\/p>\n

He looked thinner than I remembered.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re watching this because you miss me, turn it off.\u201d<\/p>\n

I covered my mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t get to boss me around.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark shifted in his chair.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m serious, Sal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then his expression changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom asked me not to donate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I leaned closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe asked more than once. Then she asked whether the decision was really mine or yours.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI told her it was mine.\u201d<\/p>\n

He rubbed his hands over his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t stand knowing strangers might receive something from me after I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/p>\n

He paused.<\/p>\n

\u201cI understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he looked directly into the camera.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut grief doesn\u2019t get to turn you into the villain.\u201d<\/p>\n

My breath caught.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t protect me by letting her hurt you. And don\u2019t let Cecelia grow up thinking her father was too weak to make his own decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n

I paused the video.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stood so quickly the chair scraped backward.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou knew she might do this, and you never told me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I pressed both hands against my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was your wife, Mark. You didn\u2019t have to protect me from everything.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was the first time I had been angry with him since he died.<\/p>\n

It felt horrible.<\/p>\n

It also felt honest.<\/p>\n

Two days later, Violet came over carrying an embroidered blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been thinking Cecelia should somehow carry Mark\u2019s name.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already chose her name.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe should have something from her father.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t need his name added to hers to be his daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet glanced toward my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark told me he changed his mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, he didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou weren\u2019t part of every conversation we had.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNeither were you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her face tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe kept things from you.\u201d<\/p>\n

That hurt.<\/p>\n

But it didn\u2019t make her right.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark and I chose Cecelia\u2019s name together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSally\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGo home.\u201d<\/p>\n

She blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou questioned Mark\u2019s judgment. You\u2019ve encouraged people to question mine. Now you\u2019re trying to rewrite what he wanted for our daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just lost my son.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t know what that feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stepped closer.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you don\u2019t know what it feels like to lose my husband while carrying the child he will never meet.\u201d<\/p>\n

She went quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can hurt differently without destroying each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet left.<\/p>\n
