\u201cYou put the third button into the fourth hole.\u201d<\/p>\n

He looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cFashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou look like a confused accordion.\u201d<\/p>\n

That managed to pull a tired laugh from him.<\/p>\n

I stepped closer and fixed his shirt.<\/p>\n

His hands had begun trembling more often.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t look at me like that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike what?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cLike you\u2019re memorizing me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stopped.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wasn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were.\u201d<\/p>\n

I finished the last button and straightened his collar.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to remember everything so I can tell our daughter who you really were.\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression changed.<\/p>\n

Then he caught my wrist.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom asked about the donation again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet had always been warm with me.<\/p>\n

During the worst weeks of morning sickness, she showed up with groceries and tiny yellow socks because, according to her, our baby was going to \u201cdrown in pink.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll talk to her,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause she\u2019ll listen to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s normally a good thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot this time.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat beside him.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe thinks I shouldn\u2019t donate.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe actually told you that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMore than once.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

He hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can\u2019t handle the idea that something of mine might belong to someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n

I squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s losing her son, Mark. I can\u2019t exactly be angry at her for saying things out of grief.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe she just needs time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe needs something to be angry at.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he looked directly at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I don\u2019t want that something to be you.\u201d<\/p>\n

I squeezed his hand harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re asking me to stay out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m asking you not to make her grief your responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

A few weeks later, Mark started asking to speak with Dr. Rivers alone.<\/p>\n

The first time, I teased him.<\/p>\n

The second time, I stopped beside the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat are you arranging?\u201d<\/p>\n

Mark leaned back against the pillows.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething I need to handle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. But it\u2019s for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat somehow makes it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n

A faint smile crossed his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease trust me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI do trust you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen let me handle this one thing myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

I nodded.<\/p>\n

When Dr. Rivers closed the door, I remained in the hallway longer than I should have.<\/p>\n

I hated not knowing.<\/p>\n

Still, I let Mark keep his secret.<\/p>\n

Mark died on a rainy Tuesday with my hand wrapped around his.<\/p>\n

Afterward, the donation team explained that everything depended on medical suitability.<\/p>\n

I answered the necessary questions.<\/p>\n

Signed the forms.<\/p>\n

Whenever anyone asked about Mark\u2019s wishes, I gave the same answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes. This is what he wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Dr. Rivers stopped me in the hallway and handed me the envelope.<\/p>\n

That night, I finally opened it.<\/p>\n

Inside was a flash drive and a folded note.<\/p>\n

I read it twice.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re d3ad,\u201d I told the note. \u201cYou don\u2019t get to give me instructions anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cecelia kicked beneath my ribs.<\/p>\n

I looked down.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour father is annoying me from beyond the grave. He deserved that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then I put the flash drive away.<\/p>\n

Two days later, Violet came over.<\/p>\n

I found her in Cecelia\u2019s nursery, refolding a pink blanket.<\/p>\n

\u201cViolet?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid they take everything?\u201d<\/p>\n

I stopped in the doorway.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom Mark.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019ll only use what can actually be donated.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gripped the blanket tightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019re fine with that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re acting fine.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat would you prefer?\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis heart. His skin. His eyes. All those things are going to strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t transplant someone\u2019s entire eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCorneal tissue can be donated.\u201d<\/p>\n

She laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes using a nicer phrase make it easier?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mouth trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow am I supposed to live knowing something that belonged to my son is out there with strangers?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause Mark was okay with it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou agreed to this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

I swallowed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat doesn\u2019t mean it was easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then Violet looked at my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou still get part of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

My hand moved protectively over Cecelia.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t put her in this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet walked out without answering.<\/p>\n

At Mark\u2019s memorial, things became worse.<\/p>\n

One of his uncles hugged me near the flowers.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark was helping people right until the end.\u201d<\/p>\n

His aunt nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou must be proud.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cProud?\u201d<\/p>\n

Violet had appeared behind us.<\/p>\n

I turned.<\/p>\n

\u201cViolet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn\u2019t get to be proud of this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Everyone nearby went silent.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark could barely walk across a room,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut we\u2019re supposed to believe he calmly decided all of this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe did.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou agreed to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, Violet. I honored my husband\u2019s final wish.\u201d<\/p>\n
