If I stopped, someone would say Mark\u2019s name again.<\/p>\n

Someone would touch my arm and give me that careful, helpless look people give a woman who is eight months pregnant and has just lost her husband.<\/p>\n

\u201cSally, please.\u201d<\/p>\n

I finally turned.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rivers was hurrying toward me with a plain envelope in his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cMark gave me this three weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

I stared at it.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s something he made me promise not to give you until now.\u201d<\/p>\n

My stomach tightened.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rivers looked exhausted.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said you would understand when you needed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

That sounded exactly like Mark.<\/p>\n

Infuriatingly vague.<\/p>\n

I took the envelope.<\/p>\n

My name was written across the front in his messy handwriting.<\/p>\n

Sally.<\/p>\n

Nothing more.<\/p>\n

Dr. Rivers hesitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe also said you don\u2019t have to open it today.\u201d<\/p>\n

I almost laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow generous of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Rivers gave me a sad smile.<\/p>\n

Then I walked away carrying the last secret my husband had ever kept from me.<\/p>\n

Two months earlier, secrets hadn\u2019t been part of our marriage.<\/p>\n

Baby names had.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbsolutely not,\u201d I told Mark.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou rejected it too quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou suggested Clementine.\u201d<\/p>\n

We were sitting on our porch with his hand resting on my six-month pregnant belly.<\/p>\n

Mark laughed.<\/p>\n

Even then, his laugh caught slightly in his chest.<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cCecelia?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMy grandmother used to sing that song with the name.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou told me your grandmother sang everything terribly.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStill counts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat is not a reason to name a human being.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt made you smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cCecelia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The baby kicked beneath his hand.<\/p>\n

Mark\u2019s eyebrows lifted.<\/p>\n

\u201cSee? She voted.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe kicked you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStrong approval.\u201d<\/p>\n

I placed my hand over his.<\/p>\n

\u201cCecelia.\u201d<\/p>\n

This time, the name felt different.<\/p>\n

It felt like our daughter\u2019s name.<\/p>\n

We had wanted her for years.<\/p>\n

Then, when I was six months pregnant, Mark became seriously ill.<\/p>\n

The doctors told us he likely had no more than three months.<\/p>\n

There was a good chance he would never live long enough to meet our daughter.<\/p>\n

One evening, we were sitting on the porch again when Cecelia kicked so hard my shirt moved.<\/p>\n

Mark watched for a moment, then rested his hand over the spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they can use anything when the time comes, I want to donate.\u201d<\/p>\n

I turned toward him.<\/p>\n

\u201cPlease don\u2019t talk about dying while she\u2019s kicking.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s exactly why I have to, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMark.\u201d<\/p>\n

His thumb moved slowly across my stomach.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I can\u2019t watch her grow up, maybe somebody else can get more time with their family.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t make dying sound noble. I\u2019m already angry enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyes met mine.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m scared too, Sal.\u201d<\/p>\n

My throat tightened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know how to do this without you.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t have to know yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if I never know?\u201d<\/p>\n

He was quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you make it up as you go.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s a terrible plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the only honest one I have.\u201d<\/p>\n

I hated that answer.<\/p>\n

By my eighth month of pregnancy, Mark had become weaker much faster than either of us expected.<\/p>\n
