When the crowd became overwhelming, Lucas guided me into the kitchen and closed the door.<\/p>\n

\u201cI should have stopped this years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou defended me today.\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI kept asking you to tolerate her because confronting her made my life uncomfortable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The baby moved beneath my palm.<\/p>\n

Lucas covered my hand with his.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur child will not grow up believing criticism is love.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked through the window.<\/p>\n

My mother was cutting cake while my nieces argued over frosting flowers.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d I replied. \u201cOur child will understand the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the final guest had left and the garden had become quiet, I found the cedar box on the dining-room table.<\/p>\n

The ribbons had been gathered and the leftover cake had been wrapped, but the box remained exactly where my mother had placed it.<\/p>\n

Lucas stood beside me.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want to remove Brenda\u2019s envelope?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at the blank envelope among all the others.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Years later, our daughter would open that box.<\/p>\n

She would read stories from her grandparents, advice from her cousins, promises from friends, and jokes from relatives who had already imagined teaching her about fishing and baking.<\/p>\n

Eventually, she would reach Brenda\u2019s envelope.<\/p>\n

She would unfold the page and discover that it contained nothing.<\/p>\n

But by then, she would already understand why.<\/p>\n

The silence would tell its own story.<\/p>\n

Brenda had been given the same opportunity as everyone else.<\/p>\n

She could have written something gentle.<\/p>\n

She could have apologised.<\/p>\n

She could have promised to become kinder before her granddaughter arrived.<\/p>\n

Instead, she had chosen to leave the page empty.<\/p>\n

A week after the shower, Brenda called Lucas.<\/p>\n

She did not call me.<\/p>\n

She claimed my mother had deliberately humiliated her and demanded that Lucas make us apologise.<\/p>\n

He listened without interrupting.<\/p>\n

Then he said, \u201cMom, you publicly insulted my pregnant wife at her own celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was concerned about her health.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo. Her doctor is responsible for her health. You wanted to embarrass her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Brenda began crying.<\/p>\n

Lucas did not soften.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou will not speak about Amy\u2019s body again. Not privately, not publicly, and not in front of our child.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd if I do?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen you will not be around our child.\u201d<\/p>\n

The silence that followed lasted several seconds.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would keep my grandchild from me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI will protect my family from anyone who teaches our daughter that love should make her feel ashamed.\u201d<\/p>\n
