One strict rule is that each person must bring a homemade dish of their choice. It was my DIL\u2019s first time. She came with a store-bought dish and said, \u2018I\u2019m not a SAHM like you, My time is valuable!\u2019 |<br \/>\nremained silent. Later, as everybody moved to the table, my DIL burst into tears when she found, next to her dish, a stack of disposable plates, and heard me say, \u201cHere\u2019s something to help speed things up. After all, you don\u2019t have time for all this effort, do you? And since this isn\u2019t homemade, I figured you wouldn\u2019t mind eating off paper plates<br \/>\nwhile we enjoy the tradition at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then I smiled politely and added,<br \/>\n\u201cSince you mentioned that, unlike me, you don\u2019t have the luxury of time to cook because you\u2019re not a stay-at-home mom, I thought I\u2019d make things a bit easier for you.\u201d \u201cThat\u2019s not-I didn\u2019t mean-\u201d she stammered, tears streaming down her face. I gently interrupted her, saying, \u201cI understand being busy, but this isn\u2019t about having time-it\u2019s about making time. It\u2019s about respect. If you value this family, you\u2019ll show it, just<br \/>\nlike everyone else here has.\u201d Dinner continued, tense but civil. After we finished, my son called me to the kitchen and told me he was very upset with me for \u2018publicly disrespecting\u2019 his wife. He insisted that I apologize to her in front of all the guests. However, I stood firm and refused. Now, it has been a week since the incident, and I haven\u2019t heard from my son or DIL. I am left wondering whether I<br \/>\noverreacted.
