and computer systems, said that the upgrade is more than three decades behind schedule and billions of dollars over budget \u2014 with no resolution yet in sight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been brought in to look at the IRS modernization program, as well as the operations and maintenance budget,\u201d Corcos told Ingraham. \u201cThis is a huge program that is already 30 years behind schedule and $15 billion over budget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRS has some legacy infrastructure\u2026 old mainframes running COBOL and Assembly, and the challenge is how do we make that a modern system? We cannot perform the basic functions of tax collection without paying a toll to all these contractors. We really have to figure out how to get out of this hole. We\u2019re in a really deep hole right now,\u201d Corcos noted further.<\/p>\n<p>Bessent then said that the real issue isn\u2019t with IRS staff but with agency contractors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the employees are fantastic. It\u2019s this consultant group. They\u2019re like a boa constrictor. They\u2019re like a python,\u201d Bessent said. \u201cThey\u2019ve constricted themselves around our government, and the costs are unbelievable. They\u2019re being passed on to the American taxpayer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe entrenched interests, the consultants, the Democrats, mainstream media, they just want to blow this project out of the water,\u201d Bessent added. \u201cThis is the opposite of government efficiency, not elimination, not extinction. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Monday that \u201cmagic money computers\u201d within the U.S. government are generating payments \u201cout of thin air,\u201d leaving lawmakers clueless about federal spending.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Cruz\u2019s podcast, Musk revealed that 14 such systems exist within the U.S. Treasury and other agencies, transferring large sums without the necessary evidence to justify the payments. Musk claimed that in departments housing one of these systems, reported spending could be off by as much as 5 percent of the budget when presented to Congress, while Cruz suggested that these improper payments could potentially total \u201ctrillions\u201d of dollars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re mostly at Treasury,\u201d Musk said about the computers discovered by his U.S. Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, \u201cbut there\u2019s some at [Health and Human Services], there\u2019s one or two at State, there\u2019s some at [the Department of Defense].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ve found now 14 magic money computers. They just send money out of nothing,\u201d he told the Texas Republican senator.<\/p>\n<p>Expounding on DOGE\u2019s discovery, the unconventional entrepreneur explained that the presence of these computers prevents the Treasury Dept. from fully informing lawmakers about the federal government\u2019s total spending.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may think that government computers all talk to each other, they all synchronize, they add up what funds are going somewhere, and it\u2019s coherent and that the numbers you\u2019re presented as a senator are actually the real numbers.
