And as the world prepares to bid farewell to Pope Francis this Saturday, the former U.S. president managed to stir controversy once again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a statement that quickly ignited backlash across social media, Trump announced his plans to attend the Pope\u2019s funeral \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t the\u00a0announcement<\/em>\u00a0that made headlines. It was the\u00a0way<\/em>\u00a0he said it.\u00a0<\/strong>\ud83d\udc47\ud83c\udffb<\/p>\n

Like many world leaders, Donald Trump was quick to offer his condolences following the death of\u00a0Pope Francis<\/a>\u00a0on April 21. The U.S. president shared a brief statement on his social media platform, Truth Social, writing: \u201cRest in peace Pope Francis! May God bless him and all who loved him!\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also took to Truth Social to announce that U.S. flags should be flown at half-staff, calling it a gesture of respect in honor of\u00a0\u201cthe memory of His Holiness Pope Francis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Inside their relationship<\/h2>\n

Donald Trump and Pope Francis didn\u2019t always see eye to eye \u2014 and while their relationship eventually turned frosty, it actually started off on a surprisingly positive note.<\/p>\n

Back in 2013, long before\u00a0Trump<\/a>\u00a0entered the White House, he had nothing but praise for the newly elected pontiff. \u201cThe new Pope is a humble man, very much like me, which probably explains why I like him so much!\u201d Trump tweeted in December of that year. It was classic Trump \u2014 equal parts compliment and self-promotion.<\/p>\n

But the honeymoon didn\u2019t last.<\/p>\n

As their public profiles grew, so did their differences. What began with flattery soon unraveled into one of the more unusual and tense dynamics between a U.S. president and the head of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

Trump and Pope Francis time on the world stage was marked by deep ideological rifts, especially around immigration and social justice.<\/p>\n

Back in 2016, the Pope famously rebuked Trump\u2019s border wall plans, saying: \u201cA person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian.\u201d Trump, in typical fashion, fired back, calling it \u201cdisgraceful\u201d for a religious leader to question someone\u2019s faith.<\/p>\n

Face-to-face meeting<\/h2>\n

In 2017, the pair met face-to-face during Trump\u2019s visit to the Vatican. Reflecting on the encounter, Trump said, \u201cHe is something. We had a fantastic meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the tensions didn\u2019t fade. During Trump\u2019s presidency and again after his return to office in 2025, the two remained divided. Pope Francis condemned the renewed push for mass deportations, calling them a \u201cdisgrace\u201d and warning that any policy \u201cbuilt on force rather than human dignity begins badly and will end badly.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Trump kept his farewell short, others were more reflective. Vice President\u00a0JD Vance<\/a>, a devout Catholic who met with the Pope shortly before his death, shared a heartfelt tribute on X:\u00a0<\/em>\u201cI just learned of the passing of Pope Francis. My heart goes out to the millions of Christians all over the world who loved him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vance recalled their final meeting, noting the Pontiff was clearly unwell, but said he\u2019d always remember the Pope for a specific message: \u201cI\u2019ll always remember him for the below homily he gave in the very early days of COVID. It was really quite beautiful. May God rest his soul.\u201d<\/p>\n

A wine tasting in Vatican City?<\/h2>\n

Despite their ideological differences, Donald Trump and his wife, Melania, will attend the Pope\u2019s funeral \u2014 a visit that also marks the president\u2019s first foreign trip of his second term in office.<\/p>\n

But it wasn\u2019t just\u00a0that<\/em>\u00a0Trump announced he\u2019d attend the funeral\u2014it was\u00a0how<\/em>\u00a0he said it that really turned heads. Here\u2019s what he wrote: \u201cMelania and I will be going to the funeral of Pope Francis, in Rome. We look forward to being there!\u201d<\/p>\n

The internet wasted no time reacting, especially on X (formerly Twitter), where users slammed the U.S. president for being tone deaf and out of touch. Reactions ranged from sarcastic jokes to harsh criticism. One user quipped, \u201cHe thinks he\u2019s going to Coachella,\u201d while another asked bluntly, \u201cWho looks forward to a funeral?\u201d<\/p>\n

The Vatican has confirmed that\u00a0Pope Francis\u2019 funeral<\/a>\u00a0will take place on Saturday, April 26 at 10 AM local time in St. Peter\u2019s Square.<\/p>\n

After the public ceremony, his body will be transported to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome\u2019s Esquilino neighborhood \u2014 the same place where Francis once said he wanted to be laid to rest.<\/p>\n
