Battling serious health issues
\nAlan Jackson, 66, one of the most beloved and bestselling country artists of all time, has officially confirmed he\u2019s hanging up his cowboy hat. The \u201cChattahoochee\u201d hitmaker previously announced that his \u201cLast Call: One More for the Road Tour\u201d would mark the final time fans would see him take the stage.<\/p>\n
Now, that time has come.Jackson took his final bow on tour Saturday night in Milwaukee, marking the end of an unforgettable era.<\/p>\n
Born in Georgia, Jackson has been battling serious health issues in recent years \u2014 a big reason behind his decision to step away from touring.<\/p>\n
\u201cY\u2019all may have heard that I\u2019m kinda winding down. In fact, this is my last roadshow of my career,\u201d Jackson told the Milwaukee crowd in a heartfelt video shared online.<\/p>\n
\u201cY\u2019all gonna make me tear up out here.\u201d<\/p>\n
But while this marks the end of his road tour days, he\u2019s planning one final emotional farewell where it all began.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will say that this is my last road show out here, but we\u2019re planning on doing a big finale show in Nashville next summer sometime,\u201d he added. \u201cI just felt like I had to end it all where it all started, and that\u2019s in Nashville, Tennessee. But this is the last one out on the road for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
A genetic neurological condition
\nJackson\u2019s team has not yet commented further, but fans are already preparing for a bittersweet goodbye.<\/p>\n
He launched the \u201cLast Call\u201d tour just a year after publicly revealing his battle with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease \u2014 a genetic neurological condition that affects muscle strength and balance. The illness is not deadly, but has affected his performances over the years. Both Jackson\u2019s grandmother and older sister have CMT as well.<\/p>\n
Though diagnosed in 2011, Jackson only recently began speaking openly about how it\u2019s affected him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have this neuropathy and neurological disease,\u201d he revealed during a Today show interview. \u201cIt\u2019s genetic that I inherited from my daddy. There\u2019s no cure for it, but it\u2019s been affecting me for years. And it\u2019s getting more and more obvious.\u201d<\/p>\n
The two-time Grammy winner admitted that performing has become physically challenging \u2013 the Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease is related to muscular dystrophy and Parkinson\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know I\u2019m stumbling around stage now,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cI\u2019m having a little trouble balancing, even in front of the microphone. I just feel very uncomfortable. In some ways it\u2019s a relief [to talk about it] because I was starting to get so self-conscious up there about stumbling around. I think it\u2019ll be good for me now to get it out in the open. If anybody\u2019s curious at why I don\u2019t walk right, that\u2019s why.\u201d<\/p>\n
Isn\u2019t done making music
\nDespite his diagnosis Jackson remains full of gratitude \u2014 not just for his fans, but for the journey he and his wife, Denise, began decades ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been a long, sweet ride. It started 40 years ago this September,\u201d he told the crowd. \u201cMy wife and I drove to Nashville with an ol\u2019 UHaul trailer, and chased this dream. It\u2019s been a crazy ride. I lived the American dream for sure. So blessed.\u201d<\/p>\n
And though he\u2019s stepping back from the spotlight, Jackson isn\u2019t done making music. In 2023, he opened up on his daughter Mattie Jackson\u2019s In Joy Life podcast about his plans to keep writing and recording.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m always scribbling down ideas and thinking about melodies\u2026 I feel like there\u2019ll be some more music to come, yes,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI may not have toured much, but again\u2026 like I said, the creative part jumps out every now and then.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201c[Writing songs] is more fulfilling than anything. It\u2019s like, you can be a singer and go out and tour \u2026 but it\u2019s kind of like you\u2019re just doing the same thing over and over.\u201d<\/p>\n
With a final concert in Nashville planned for summer, Jackson\u2019s farewell promises to be a powerful, emotional send-off \u2014 and one last chance for fans to thank a country legend who\u2019s given them decades of unforgettable music.<\/p>\n
