A British man has walked away from the wreckage of the Air India crash that killed 241 people in an extraordinary tale of survival.<\/b><\/p>\n

Vishwashkumar Ramesh was in seat 11A on the London-bound Boeing 787-8 flight when it crashed shortly after take off in Ahmedabad, western India.<\/p>\n

Mr Ramesh\u2019s brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, told BBC News Vishwashkumar \u201chas no idea how he survived\u201d\u00a0<\/b>and escaped the plane as the only survivor.<\/p>\n

Air India said all other passengers and crew were killed \u2013 including 169 Indian nationals and 52 other Britons.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Nayan told the BBC \u201cit feels great seeing him [Vishwashkumar] doing well\u201d but he was worried about his other brother Ajay, who was also onboard.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were all in shock as soon as we heard what happened, just utter shock. Speechless,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe [Vishwashkumar] himself has no idea how he survived, how he got out the plane.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen he called us he was just more worried about my other brother, like \u2018Find Ajay, find Ajay.\u2019 That\u2019s all he cares about at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

A relative called Jay told the PA news agency: \u201cHe\u2019s got some injuries on his face. He was painted in blood. He\u2019s doing well I think. It\u2019s a big shock.\u201d<\/p>\n

Video shared on social media showed Mr Ramesh walking towards an ambulance, with smoke billowing in the background.<\/p>\n

He was later seen in a hospital bed meeting Indian interior minister Amit Shah.<\/p>\n

Indian media said Mr Ramesh shared his boarding pass, which showed his name and seat number.<\/p>\n

He has a wife and child. The BBC understands he was born in India, but has lived in the UK for many years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Amid all the horror of the Air India plane crash on Thursday, which killed at least 240 people, this story of British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh from Leicester, who was in seat 11a, being the sole survivor and walking away with just a few scratches, is truly astonishing.

    He says: \u201c30 seconds after takeoff there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly. When I got up there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>

    Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik confirmed to Indian news agency ANI that one man survived the crash.<\/p>\n

    He said: \u201cThe police found one survivor in seat 11A.<\/p>\n

    \u201cOne survivor has been found in the hospital and is under treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Three Britons thought to have died on the flight have been named by Gloucester Muslim Society as Akeel Nanabawa, his wife Hannaa Vorajee and their daughter Sara.<\/p>\n

    Couple Fiongal and Jamie Greenlaw-Meek, who run a spiritual wellness centre in London, are also thought to have been on the flight.<\/p>\n

    They laughed and joked in an Instagram video as they told of their \u201c10-hour flight back to England\u201d.<\/p>\n

    Their firm the Wellness Foundry has been approached for comment.<\/p>\n

    The granddaughter of a couple, from Blackburn, who were onboard the flight said she is in shock and disbelief.<\/p>\n

    Adam Taju, 72, and his wife Hasina, 70, were flying back from Ahmedabad\u2019s International Airport with their 51-year-old son-in-law, Altafhusen Patel who lives in London with his wife.<\/p>\n

    Ammaarah Taju says they are \u201cclinging onto hope\u201d that they are still alive.<\/p>\n

    The plane crashed into accommodation used by doctors less than a minute after take-off. The cause of the crash is still unknown.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    In a statement from the King, he said he and his wife were \u201cdesperately shocked by the terrible events in Ahmedabad this morning\u201d.<\/p>\n

    \u201cOur special prayers and deepest possible sympathy are with the families and friends of all those affected by this appallingly tragic incident across so many nations, as they await news of their loved ones,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

    Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said he could not confirm reports a British national had survived the crash and the government was still establishing facts.<\/p>\n

    He said his thoughts were with the families who were going to be \u201cabsolutely devastated by this awful news\u201d, while his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi said it was \u201cheart-breaking beyond words\u201d.<\/p>\n

    UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy has arranged crisis teams in India and the UK.<\/p>\n

    London Gatwick Airport confirmed that a reception centre for relatives of passengers was being set up where information would be provided, and that it was liaising closely with Air India.<\/p>\n

    It said on X: \u201cBritish nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call 0207 008 5000.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Air India flight AI171 left Ahmedabad\u2019s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 13:39 local time (08:09 GMT), Air India said.<\/p>\n

    It was scheduled to land at London Gatwick at 18:25 BST.<\/p>\n
