Arizona Congressman Ra\u00fal Grijalva has passed away at the age of 77 following complications related to cancer treatment, his office confirmed Thursday. Grijalva had publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in April 2024 and had since been undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cRep. Grijalva fought a long and brave battle,\u201d his office said in a statement. \u201cHe was known for his kind and humble nature and treated everyone with respect and equality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grijalva served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2002, representing a district in southern Arizona along the U.S.-Mexico border. Throughout his 12 terms in office, he was an influential voice on issues related to public lands and environmental conservation. He held key roles on the House Natural Resources Committee, including both chair and ranking member, and was active in advancing environmental protection and indigenous rights.<\/p>\n

He was also involved with several congressional caucuses, notably serving as chair emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and participating in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. Grijalva\u2019s legislative work reflected a consistent focus on social equity, public education, and environmental stewardship.<\/p>\n

Beyond policy, those who worked with him often described him as warm, generous, and accessible. \u201cHe loved to give gifts, blare music in his office, and get to know people for who they are,\u201d his office recalled.<\/p>\n

Grijalva had won re-election in 2024 by a wide margin, continuing his long-standing service in one of Arizona\u2019s most reliably Democratic districts. His passing leaves a vacancy in the House that will be filled through a special election.<\/p>\n

Tributes poured in from his colleagues across the political spectrum. Rep. Greg Casar of Texas remembered him as \u201ca mentor and a champion of environmental justice,\u201d while Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington praised his leadership and unwavering commitment to the people he served.<\/p>\n

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries noted Grijalva\u2019s lasting impact in Congress, calling him \u201ca progressive warrior\u201d and \u201ca mentor to many and a friend to all.\u201d<\/p>\n
