\nbroad swatch of central Texas early Thursday
\nafternoon, urging residents of several countries to
\nbe on alert for flood warnings. It was followed by sev\u00earal urgent alerts the federal agency issuedHundreds of emergency personnel were searching
\nfor stranded people, using 14 helicopters and
\nground crews who were struggling to navigate
\nflooded roads, officials said.<\/p>\n

They warned that the
\ndeath toll was likely to rise.
\n\u201cThis is a tragic event. It\u2019s going to be a mass
\ncasualty event,\u201d Freeman F. Martin, the director of
\nthe Texas Department of Public Safety, told

\nMr Patrick said Camp Mystic was contacting the
\nperenis of campers who remain unaccounted for.
\nCamp Mystic: The Christian summer camp for
\ngirls on the Guadalupe River is nearly a century
\nold. Its facilities include a recreation hall that was
\nconstructed in the 1920s from local cypress trees.
\nPast flooding: For those old enough to have lived
\nthrough it, the flooding on Friday surfaced
\nmemories of a deadly swelling of the waters along
\nthe Guadalupe River on July 17, 1987.
