In news that has cast a shadow of sorrow across the region, a tragic accident occurred on the morning of Tuesday, July 5, on the highway to Magdalena Peñasco, in Oaxaca’s picturesque Mixteca region. A bus carrying numerous passengers overturned, resulting in a preliminary death toll of 27, with an additional 17 injured, according to statements from Oaxaca’s Secretary of Government, Jesús Romero López.

Initial reports indicate that the vehicle involved was a 2002 Jaguar bus, traveling from Santiago Yosondúa to Mexico City. Tragically, en route to Magdalena Peñasco, the driver lost control, causing the bus to fall down a ravine and land on the riverbank just behind the community church.

The consequences of the accident were devastating. Passengers were trapped beneath the bus, resulting in immediate fatalities, as confirmed by state authorities and Civil Protection teams quickly dispatched to the scene.

The Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office, alongside paramedics from multiple agencies, immediately responded to assist the injured. Those hurt were transported to the IMSS Bienestar Rural Hospital in Tlaxiaco, near the accident site.

Authorities from the Oaxaca Prosecutor’s Office have already launched initial investigations to determine the causes of this horrific accident. Many of the victims have yet to be formally identified.

The local community, working alongside authorities, is conducting painstaking recovery operations. Heavy machinery has been deployed to lift the wreckage of the destroyed bus. The accident occurred shortly after six o’clock in the morning, plunging the entire Mixteca region of Oaxaca into grief and shock.
