Amazon is under scrutiny after a book about the assassination of Charlie Kirk appeared for sale with a publication date of September 9, 2025 — one day before the Turning Point USA founder was fatally shot at Utah Valley University.
The listing, titled “The Shooting of Charlie Kirk,” quickly spread on social media, prompting outrage among Kirk’s supporters. Amazon immediately removed the title shortly after the timing was flagged.
Amazon attributed the erroneous publication date to a “technical issue,” saying the book was actually released late on Sept. 10, 2025.
“Due to a technical issue, the date of publication that had been displayed for this title, while it was briefly listed, was incorrect, and we apologize for any confusion this may have caused,” a company spokesperson told Breitbart News.
Amazon emphasized that the book violated its content guidelines and could not remain on the platform, according to the outlet.
“We have content guidelines governing which books can be listed for sale, and we remove books that do not adhere to these guidelines,” the spokesperson told Breitbart. “The title in question is no longer available for sale.”
The book’s timing intensified the shock over Charlie Kirk’s assassination. The Turning Point USA founder was shot during an event at Utah Valley University, allegedly by 22-year-old Tyler Robinson. Authorities said Robinson acted alone and was arrested after being turned in by his father, a retired police officer.
Experts say the book’s premature listing may have stemmed from automated systems or AI-generated content that slipped past Amazon’s review process. Its swift removal suggests the title likely should never have appeared in the retailer’s catalog.
Amazon says the listing was an unintentional error, but the incident has fueled criticism of the company’s content moderation and reliance on AI-assisted publishing. The book has been permanently removed, while authorities continue investigating the circumstances of Kirk’s assassination.
The controversy follows new revelations about Kirk’s alleged assassin, Tyler Robinson, including the discovery of a secret hideout where he briefly eluded authorities and evidence pointing to premeditated targeting. The combination of the assassination itself, the engraved bullet casings, and the briefly listed book has fueled online outrage, with social media users questioning how such content could surface before the events unfolded.
Officials maintain Robinson acted alone but continue to review surveillance footage, digital records, and possible signs of radicalization as they piece together a motive.
But that said, federal and state law enforcement officials are also investigating leftist groups in Utah to determine whether they had prior knowledge of the alleged shooter’s plans or provided material support afterward, Axios reported on Sunday. “One of those groups eliminated its social media profile after the shooting,” the outlet noted further.
Kirk’s killing has sparked national debate over security for public figures, rising political tensions on college campuses, and the role of online radicalization.
Turning Point USA published a statement describing Kirk as “America’s greatest martyr to the freedom of speech he so adored,” while noting the tragic irony that the event occurred during a campus discussion intended to foster more respectful dialogue and understanding.
A former high school friend of Robinson described him as “pretty left on everything” and said he was the “only member of his family that was really leftist.”
“The rest of his family was very hard Republican,” the friend said in a phone interview Friday, asking to remain anonymous, The Guardian reported.
The friend said Robinson’s political views became more extreme around his sophomore year. “He would always just be ranting and arguing about them,” the friend said.
