Jeep Smashes Buggy, Ejects Family of 9 Amish ~ Five children were…See more

BERNE, Indiana — A peaceful rural road turned into a scene of chaos late Sunday night when a Jeep collided with a horse-drawn Amish buggy on State Road 218, injuring several people — most of them children. The crash occurred around 11:20 p.m. near Berne, scattering debris across the pavement and sending multiple victims to area hospitals.

Authorities confirmed that the buggy, carrying nine occupants, was struck from behind by a Jeep driven by 33-year-old Bradley J. Ocilka of Burlington, Kentucky. Seven passengers were injured, including six juveniles. The buggy’s driver, 32-year-old Ruben L.M. Schwartz, was airlifted to Lutheran Hospital, while five others were taken by ambulance to Parkview Hospital. Two passengers — including a 2-year-old — declined treatment at the scene. Ocilka was taken for a legal blood draw but declined further medical care.

Emergency crews from multiple agencies — including Adams County EMS, Berne Fire Department, Indiana State Police, and Lutheran’s Flight Team — responded to the scene, which officials described as “chaotic.” Photos released by authorities showed the shattered remains of the buggy and flashing emergency lights stretching across the dark roadway. The close-knit Amish community is rallying to support the Schwartz family during their recovery. The crash underscores ongoing safety concerns between motor vehicles and horse-drawn buggies on rural roads, particularly at night. Law enforcement officials urge drivers to slow down, remain alert for lanterns or reflective markers, and give extra space when approaching buggies. The investigation remains active, and no charges have been announced at this time.
