Legendary Music Mogul Who Launched Global Superstars Passes Away Quietly At Age Ninety-Four

Clive Davis, one of the most influential figures in modern music history, has died at the age of 94. His family confirmed that the legendary record executive passed away peacefully at his home in Manhattan, New York, after an age-related illness. Davis’ death marked the end of a career that helped shape the sound of American pop, rock, R&B, soul, and contemporary music for more than six decades.

To the public, Davis was the industry titan with an extraordinary instinct for talent. To his family, he was a father, grandfather, and steady source of love and guidance. In their tribute, his loved ones remembered him not only as a music legend, but as a man whose greatest pride remained the people closest to him.

Davis’ final public appearance came on May 19, 2026, at the Gordon Parks Foundation Awards Dinner and Auction in New York City. He attended the event alongside prominent figures from the entertainment world. Not long afterward, he was hospitalized in New York for an upper respiratory infection, before returning home to recover.

His path into the music business was not obvious at first. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Davis graduated from New York University and Harvard Law School before joining Columbia Records in the early 1960s. By 1967, at just 35, he had become president of Columbia Records.

That same year, after attending the Monterey Pop Festival, Davis signed Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company, a move that helped define his reputation as a fearless talent scout.

Over the following years, Davis became associated with an astonishing range of artists, including Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Santana, Aerosmith, Simon & Garfunkel, Pink Floyd, Barbra Streisand, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Barry Manilow, Alicia Keys, Kelly Clarkson, and Whitney Houston. He helped build Columbia’s rock roster, founded Arista Records in 1974, and later launched J Records in 2000.

At Arista, Davis quickly proved that he could build a label from scratch. One of the company’s earliest defining hits was Barry Manilow’s “Mandy,” which became Arista’s first major success. Davis would go on to turn Arista into a powerhouse, signing and supporting artists across pop, R&B, rock, country, and adult contemporary music.

His most famous professional partnership was with Whitney Houston, whom he signed to Arista in 1983. Under Davis’ guidance, Houston became one of the most successful vocalists of all time. Their relationship went beyond business; Davis remained a mentor, advocate, and close figure in her life as her career rose to global superstardom.
