She arrived late to her only son’s funeral and stood in front of the grave to stop them from burying him! When she demanded they open the casket, her daughter-in-law’s face confessed a betrayal worse than death!

Mrs. Clara felt the entire cemetery tilt.

“Your father died twenty-seven years ago.”

“That’s what they made us believe.”

The call filled with static. Then a male voice was heard, far from Leonard. “Take the phone from him!”

There was a thud. The line went dead.

Mrs. Clara stood staring at Veronica’s cell phone. Her son’s name was still illuminated on the screen. Leonard was alive. And the corpse in front of her belonged to Benjamin Vance, the man she had mourned for almost three decades.

Veronica took advantage of the confusion to break free. She ran toward the cemetery exit. She didn’t make it to the gate. One of the gravediggers blocked her path with a wheelbarrow and forced her to her knees.

Lawrence Cobb raised his hands. “This must be a mistake.”

Mrs. Clara turned to him. “My son just said not to trust anyone from the construction firm.”

“I didn’t know he was alive.”

“But you did know that dead man wasn’t him.”

Lawrence turned pale. The young lawyer started to back away. Two employees grabbed him. Someone had already called the police.

While they waited, Mrs. Clara looked at the corpse again. The scar on the cheek wasn’t there when Benjamin disappeared. But she recognized other things. The shape of the hands. The slight curve of the pinky finger. The gap between the bottom teeth. And a round birthmark behind the left ear.

It was him. There was no doubt.

For years she had been told that Benjamin died falling down a ravine while inspecting a highway in the Texas hill country. The vehicle was found burned. They never recovered the body. Just a belt buckle, bone fragments, and a report signed by the company. The same company that, years later, became the construction firm where Leonard worked.

Mrs. Clara closed her eyes. She had buried an empty box. Now they were about to bury her husband using her son’s name.

The police arrived accompanied by state investigators. They cordoned off the grave. They detained Veronica, Lawrence, and the lawyer. The casket was sent to the medical examiner’s office.

Mrs. Clara handed over the phone. Before they took it away, she checked the recent calls. There were several unknown numbers. She photographed the screen with the cell phone of a woman who was recording the scene. One call was repeated every night. It lasted less than a minute. The number belonged to a temporary office set up next to an abandoned hospital construction site in Arlington.

The lead investigator, Detective Olivia Marshall, asked her to go to the station to give a statement.

“My son is locked up,” Clara replied. “First we go get him.”

“We can’t go in without confirming the location.”

“He said it himself.”

“He could also have been speaking under duress.”

“Then we have even more reason to move.”
