PART 3 At 77, I got dressed for my son’s 7 p.m.

Wesley and Serena arrived at my driveway in a panic shortly after their credit cards stopped working.

 

I asked Lydia to stand on my porch as a witness while I faced my son and his angry wife. Serena attempted to dismiss the situation as a private matter but I presented my folder and recounted every time she had deliberately excluded me from family events like school plays and neighborhood lunches.

 

When Wesley realized the staggering total of ninety three thousand six hundred dollars I had contributed in just one year he looked completely shattered.

 

I told my son I was cutting off the money so he could finally learn how to stand on his own two feet. The first month of silence was incredibly difficult but I gradually built a peaceful new life and joined a library bridge group.
