Vanessa sold her wedding jewelry first.
Then the designer furniture.
Finally, she sold the car she had driven to my courthouse ceremony while mocking the “cheap flowers.”
My parents moved into a rental home.
Dad sent an email claiming I had taken matters too far.
I printed it, placed it beside the original wedding invoice, and stored both inside a folder labeled:
Paid in Full.
Months later, Vanessa returned.
This time, she was quieter.
“I really thought they loved us equally,” she said.
I looked at her and almost felt sympathy.
“They taught you love was a spotlight,” I replied. “They taught me love was a bill.”
She had no response.
Caleb and I celebrated our first anniversary with paper plates and a grocery-store cake.
There was no champagne tower.
No marble aisle.
No debt disguised beneath flowers.
Only peace.
When Mom eventually texted, Family should forgive, I answered once.
Family should not invoice love.
Then I blocked the final number.
