PART 4 My dad stood in my kitchen asking to borrow $1,000, his hands shaking with embarrassment

I took Victoria’s inheritance, but I liquidated most of the commercial real estate. I used a massive chunk of that money to launch a non-profit that helps families dig into sketchy adoption records and pry open sealed hospital archives. I called it The Victoria and Samuel Project.

My dad hated the name. “Just name it after your mom,” he grumbled. “She’s the one who looked for you.” “And you’re the one who found me.” “I just did what any decent person would do.” “But nobody else did.”

I bought him a cozy little house right down the street from mine and set up a limitless fund for his medical bills. He argued with me about it until I officially named the account his ‘thirty-two years of back-pay for parental leave’.

A few months after the divorce went through, Rachel texted me from a burner number.

All of this over a thousand dollars.

I forwarded it to my lawyer, then texted back:

No. All of this happened because you humiliated the only man who never abandoned me.

I blocked the number forever.

On the exact anniversary of the day Samuel rescued me, I took him out for a steak dinner. He grumbled about the menu prices, the small side dishes, and the ridiculous amount of silverware on the table. Afterward, I handed him a small wooden box. Inside was his handwritten letter, the $1,000 receipt for the legal files, and the old photo of the faded blue blanket.

He stared down at it for a long, quiet minute.

“That thousand bucks caused a hell of a lot of trouble,” he muttered. “No. It just dragged the trouble out into the light.”

He traced the edge of the photo. “You’ve got two families now.” “I have two histories.”

He gave a slow, understanding nod.

“Victoria gave me my beginning,” I said softly. “You gave me everything that came after.”

His eyes glassed over with tears.

My biological mother had spent her entire life trying to find me. My dad had spent his entire life staying right by my side. One gave me my beginning. The other gave me everything that came after.
