If you believe everything you see on social media (which you shouldn’t), you’d think Kacey Musgraves was less than thrilled by the Best Country Album winner at the 67th GRAMMY Awards. Of course, as most gossip online, it’s safe to say that’s mostly nonsense. Still, that hasn’t stopped fans from adding their two cents.
During Sunday’s ceremony, Taylor Swift came to the stage to present the annual award.
Musgraves was up for the honor for her album, Deeper Well. She was competing against four other nominees: Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion, Chris Stapleton’s Higher, Lainey Wilson’s Whirlwind, and Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter.
When Swift announced the latter artist as the winner, Beyoncé, who some believe has been snubbed by the country community since her transition to the genre, was plainly shocked by the news.
As Beyoncé’s husband, JAY-Z, and daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, celebrated her win and encouraged her to head up to the stage, the cameras flashed to several of the losers in the category.
While those shown were all standing and clapping for Beyoncé, Musgraves’ reaction made waves on social media for looking displeased by the outcome.
“kacey musgraves is looking pissed after losing to beyonce icl it tickled me a lil,” one person tweeted, while another remarked, “Is Kacey Musgraves mad that Beyoncé won? She sure looks it.”
Some users came to Musgraves’ defense, saying she deserved the award over Beyoncé.
Don’t Read Much Into It: Musgraves Supports Beyoncé’s Move Into Country
After Beyoncé’s GRAMMYs acceptance speech, during which she declared that “genre is a code word to keep us in our place as artists,” the camera once again turned to a still stone-faced Musgraves.
Musgraves has previously spoken out in support of Beyoncé’s move to country music.
“The more the f**king merrier,” she told The Cut. “I don’t really care. It doesn’t affect what I’m doing. It doesn’t affect me. I’ve always been just doing my own thing. It’s just fun to watch.”
Kacey Musgraves’ GRAMMYs Night
While Musgraves didn’t walk away with the Best Country Album award, she was victorious on GRAMMY night. The country singer, who had four nominations this year, won Best Country Song for “The Architect.” She’s also up for Country Solo Performance and Americana Performance.
Meanwhile, Beyoncé leads the pack with 11 nods at the ceremony, which Trevor Noah is hosting for the fifth straight year.
