Two Minnesota Democrats Shot Overnight By Man Impersonating Police

Two Minnesota Democratic lawmakers and their spouses were shot in separate targeted attacks by a man reportedly impersonating a police officer. The shootings occurred overnight in the cities of Champlin and Brooklyn Park. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife were shot at their home in Champlin. Both survived and are recovering after surgery.

However, House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot in their Brooklyn Park residence. Governor Tim Walz confirmed the attacks, describing them as acts of “targeted political violence.” He activated the State Emergency Operations Center and assured the public that law enforcement had full state support. “Peaceful discourse is the foundation of our democracy,”

Walz said during a Saturday press briefing. He described Hortman as a leader known for her compassion and service.

The suspect, described as a white male in black body armor and a blue shirt, was reportedly indistinguishable from a real officer. He used a police-like SUV with lights and equipment to gain access. Authorities say he exchanged gunfire with officers before fleeing. A statewide manhunt is ongoing, and the public is warned not to approach him. The FBI is assisting in the investigation. Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson called the suspect’s impersonation “a betrayal” of public trust. Senator Amy Klobuchar expressed condolences, calling the incident a “stunning act of violence.” This remains a developing story. Updates will follow as new information becomes available.
