Federal authorities have disclosed new details concerning the temporary detention of a Democrat from New York state during a confrontation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Tuesday.

ICE agents apprehended state Comptroller Brad Lander, who is running for mayor of New York City, after he allegedly attacked one of the agents while attempting to obstruct the arrest of a suspected undocumented immigrant. Lander persistently insisted that the agents present a “judicial warrant” to validate their actions.

“You lack the authority to detain U.S. citizens who are requesting a judicial warrant,” Lander exclaimed at one point.

Left-wing “Squad” Democrat Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez from New York remarked, “He requested ICE to show their warrant — which is entirely within his legal rights.”

However, as reported by the Washington Times, “experts indicated that he misunderstood immigration law. Immigration enforcement, especially within the country’s interior, is typically a civil issue with deportation as the penalty.

“ICE deportation officers executing those arrests operate under administrative warrants, not judicial warrants, as there is no criminal charge but merely an allegation of illegal presence,” the Times report further elaborated.

Lander is merely the most recent Democrat to be arrested for allegedly obstructing ICE and assaulting its agents.

As news of his arrest emerged, Senator Alex Padilla was on the Senate floor defending his recent altercation with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem concerning immigration enforcement and the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles. He also found himself in handcuffs, although he was neither arrested nor detained.

In a separate incident related to ICE, New Jersey Democrat Representative LaMonica McIver has been charged with assaulting federal officers after video evidence reportedly captured her using her forearm to push ICE agents during a confrontation at a detention facility in New Jersey. She is facing nearly two decades in prison.

“It is complete nonsense, and it is evident that the Democrats’ current strategy is to obstruct in every possible way because they understand that they will lose on the merits of these issues,” he stated to the Times.

Following his arrest, Lander was released from the federal courthouse, where he was accompanied by New York Governor Kathy Hochul (D). At a press conference outside the courthouse, Hochul declared that the charges against Lander had been dismissed.

Nevertheless, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York indicated that officials are still “continuing to investigate” Lander’s actions.

“Our brave ICE law enforcement officers are experiencing a 413% rise in assaults against them—it is unacceptable that politicians aiming for higher office jeopardize law enforcement safety for a moment of viral fame,” a DHS spokesperson remarked. “No one is above the law, and if you assault a law enforcement officer, you will face repercussions.”

Video evidence of Lander’s arrest seems to depict him clinging to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as they escorted a defendant from immigration court at 26 Federal Plaza, persistently questioning whether the officials possessed a judicial warrant.

“I will release my grip when you present the judicial warrant!” Lander exclaimed in the footage. “Where is it?! Where is the warrant?!”

Donna Lieberman, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, criticized the arrest, echoing Democratic Party rhetoric by labeling it an abuse of power and a threat to democracy, asserting that Lander was targeted merely for “asking questions.”

“Arresting a public official, the duly-elected comptroller of the City of New York, for inquiring is a dangerous form of intimidation and demonstrates a blatant disregard for the will of the people of New York,” Lieberman stated in a release.

“It conveys an unmistakably authoritarian message – that ICE disregards the rule of law and that anyone who exercises their right to challenge ICE and advocate for immigrants will be penalized,” the statement continued.
