Under Attack

In a single instant—the calm shattered.

The yard, which only moments ago had felt like a quiet, ordinary morning scene, turned into something tense and unpredictable. The sun had just begun to rise, casting a soft golden light over the worn wooden fence and the dry ground. The hens scratched lazily at the dirt, searching for seeds or insects, while the proud rooster, his feathers glowing like embers in the early light, moved with confidence across his territory.

Then it happened.

A sudden noise—a sharp clash of wings and dust—and everything changed. From the far edge of the yard, a shadow lunged forward with lightning speed. The rooster didn’t even have time to fully understand what was happening. A predator, silent and patient until that very second, had chosen its moment.

The hens froze. Some scattered in short bursts of panic, bumping into one another as they tried to escape. Others stood completely still, as if their minds couldn’t process the sudden shift from calm to danger. The air filled with a thick, invisible tension that seemed to hold every creature suspended between fear and instinct.

The rooster, though caught off guard, did not surrender immediately. He flapped his wings with force, kicking up dust into the air. His voice—usually proud and commanding—became sharp, raw, a cry driven by survival. He fought with everything he had, every movement desperate and fierce. In that moment, he was no longer a symbol of pride—he was simply a living being trying to stay alive.

The predator moved with precision. Every motion was deliberate, guided by something ancient and unthinking. Its eyes were fixed, empty of emotion, focused only on one purpose: survival. There was no anger, no cruelty—only necessity.

Nearby, an older hen—one that usually kept to herself—did something unexpected. She didn’t run. She didn’t hide. Instead, she stepped forward slowly, cautiously. It wasn’t bravery in the human sense, but something deeper, more instinctive. Perhaps a pull she couldn’t ignore, a connection to the familiar life of the yard that made her hesitate to abandon it completely.

But nature does not pause for hesitation.

Within seconds, the struggle reached its peak. Dust rose higher, sounds blended into a wild, chaotic storm—and then… a strange quiet began to settle. Not a peaceful silence, but the kind that follows something sudden and irreversible.

One by one, the hens emerged from where they had hidden. Their movements were careful, uncertain. Their eyes darted in every direction, still searching for danger. The yard looked the same—but it didn’t feel the same.

The sun kept rising.

The wind moved gently through the space.

And life… went on.

That brief moment had revealed something deeper: beneath even the calmest surface, there is always something unpredictable waiting. Instinct never disappears—it only waits for the right moment to take over.

The yard might seem ordinary, but for those living in it, every second carries the possibility of chaos. And still, despite everything, the cycle continues—because that is the nature of life.

Unstoppable. Unbiased. Always moving forward.
