For years, I cheated on my wife

I wrote my name on that envelope as if it were the name of a dead man.

My hands refused to obey.

The paper weighed more than all my lies put together.

Sarah stood next to the table.

With that calm that was no longer patience, but a door locked from the inside.

I tore the envelope open.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

“David: You don’t know me, although I know entirely too much about you.

My name is Andrew.

I am a lawyer.

Sarah hired me eight months ago, not to destroy you, but to help her save the only things she still could: herself and your children.

Today I held her hand because she had just signed the divorce papers.”

I felt the kitchen floor sinking beneath my feet.

I kept reading, but the letters were blurring and jumping.

“Sarah asked me not to move forward until you knew the whole truth.

She didn’t want revenge.

She didn’t want to expose you.
She wanted you, for once, to listen without having a way out.”

I looked up.

“Divorce?” I asked, as if that word didn’t exist in my language.

Sarah didn’t answer right away.

She crossed her arms, not to defend herself, but to keep herself from falling apart.

“Yes, David.”

The stew was still warm on the stove.

In the living room, my kids’ toys were scattered as if normal life had been interrupted right in the middle.

“Since when?” I asked.

“Since I realized I wasn’t going to die waiting for you.”

I wanted to get angry.

I wanted to tell her she was exaggerating, that we all make mistakes, that you don’t destroy a family like this.

But the folder was still open on the table.

Full of photos of me leaving hotels, restaurants, and other people’s cars.

My defense was completely dismantled by photographs.

“I can change,” I said.

Sarah smiled.
